View Full Version : Character WIP: Dark Elven Warrior
ThunderTurtle 02-20-2003, 11:01 AM This is the start on a dark elven warrior. The design is based off the concept by excube. This version is perhaps more elven, lacking some of the orcish quailties, but the head may change before it's over. All comments and Crit are welcome. I'll post updates as I go. I just started on the armor, so it needs a lot of detailing and adjustment I know. Probobly going to do hands next, then legs and rest of his armor weaons.

Looken Good
Are you going to add more detail to the Chest plate?
I think the ears look a little funny but that's just me.

Hey dude
Nice lookin character, that's for sure. But he is maybe a bit to muscular for an elf i think. They are supposed to be slender creatures, that are fast and not so strong like you make him. He looks more like a kind of barbarian type.
Still, looking good and keep it up. I like the armor

Small update.. raised the brestplate some to better match his figure. a small start on the cloak that will wrap his body. Still lots of armor and everything else to do. I'll definitly work on everyones comments and make him meaner looking to fit the muscular build. Thanks.

looking great!
very nice model!
Anatomically I think you have some problems. The biceps are orientated upwards but the the forearms are facing foreward. The forearms are at an un-natural orientation. Try posing your forearm like your model's. It's possible but you have to roll your shouder forward to do it and it feels awkward. Your shoulder in the model is a bit on the small and short side.
So I'd roll the forearm by about 45degrees so it's facing more upwards.
Scale the bicep down by quite a bit because it looks too big for the rest of the arm and shoulder because even on a body builder the biceps would not be so much larger then the front deltoids [front shoulder]. Also flatten them because in that pose a bicep would be relaxed and not tensed up like you have them.
When you've done that add a subtle crease underneath the bicep to signify the seperation from the triceps on the underside.
Overall it's looking great though! Like the face and hair especially.

hey TT i have a question how did you get the creases/indentations....the lines....in the chestplate or are those just seperate pieces
ThunderTurtle
02-22-2003, 11:36 PM
Thanks Bliz, I'll work on it for the next update.
Snakeman: The chestplate started out as splines for each seperate peice, but were eventually all connected together to form the plate. It's just a combo of splines for the shapes and then meshsmoothing with edge crease settings to give the sharp edges where I needed them. Hope that answers it.
more to come, thanks guys.

I've been checking the Game Art forum so much lately that I haven't stopped by this one in a while. I've almost forgotten how good high-poly work can look. This is a promising model, thumbs up without a doubt! The musculature is great, and I really like the rib armor. I look forward to seeing this finished and especially textured. Good luck!

Wow, nice model there. I'm starting to see more and more good work in polys, especially out of Max users. Keep up the good work and update often. I can't wait to see it textured. It is going to be textured right? Like you're working on it right now? Great! Awesome! Looking foward to seeing it done up pretty.

Yes very nice armour, it will look really nice once it's all surfaced - that bicep is still twisted the wrong way though :D

Here's some more. Thanks for the comments everybody
http://www.vi2.com/getFile/106263.jpg
Bliz: I'm working on it.. really. I'll have to go back to some anatomy books. from looking at my own arm, I was seeing it as the bicep is the main muscle facing forward on the model, and I guess tricep showing up over the top really. I may just be all mixed up on it, but i'll do some research and see what can be done to correct it.

Here's another small update: Started on the sash and fixed some issues with the cloak intersecting some of the armor. Next order of bussiness is to add more definition on the legs and get his feet/boots on him so I can see if I need to adjust leg proportions. Comments welcome as always.

I think it woule be cool if the "dress" so to speak wasnt fully open in the front, maybe turn it so one leg is more covered, make it not so symetricial? Just a thought.
ThunderTurtle
03-01-2003, 08:56 AM
Thanks for the idea Are3DIt's really more of a losse hanging cloak type thing, at least that's what i'll call it since dark elven swordsman/archers cant quite strike fear in the hearts of thier enemies in a dress ;) I still need to rework the loin cloth to look more like a loin cloth and less like a skirt and I think that will help the overall look. I'll try bringing one of the sides around and see how it looks. Should have boots on him in just a little bit. Thanks for the comment.
ps. Also still looking for ideas on how to pose him

Still working on it..I'm having some trouble with the legs, but can't quite put my finger on it.. I think maybe they are too short and too fraile for his build. Any ideas?

sup bud...
ya the legs to short and small for the body the upper body is pretty wide........for and accurate discription of how tall somone is i beleive for a male its like 7 and 1/2 heads tall....use the head determine the correct size and proportions.....just the legs i think are supposed to be 4 and 1/2 heads long from waist to toe........hehehe....one of the ol' 2d artists tricks of the trade hehe
hope this helps
keep up the work..........WE WANT MORE DETAILS WE WANT MORE DETAILS:bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Snakeman: Thanks a lot for the info. I knew all that from my life drawing classes, I just guess I was forgetting to put it to use on the model.. Here is an update. hope it's a little better. As soon as I get the proportions down i'll be going back with more detail, more armor, and weapons. Thanks all.

nice work, and good evolution, just one comment, te union line betwen two sides (left-rigth) looks for me an error, can you smooth them or is intentional?
ThunderTurtle
03-04-2003, 12:10 PM
Thanks for the comment. Only reason there is a crease there right now is because only one have is modeled and then it is mirrored(instanced) to the other side so that I can see the full character while I am working on it. (you just adjust 1 leg and the other changes with it automaticly) When I am finished it will be welded together and the smoothing will erase the seam there.

Also in case anyone is intrested here is a quick animation of the model in it's current state. I did it for a quick camera/aftereffects assignment. divx 5.0.3 www.divx.com if you need the new upgrade. I think it sticks about half way with the old version of divx. Oh yeah, and I know the ears need work, I had forgotten about them, but they will be next up to tweak.

Okay I've been following ur progress really close now. I just have one little crit. He reminds me a bit of a dwarf. Sorry I had to go there but he looks a bit stocky. Not sure if you were going for this but if you were more power to ya.
It just seems to me that hes to stocky to be an elf. When I picture an elf I picture a thin elegant creature from the tales of old. Remember that elves are fleet creatures so you must do them just by making them thus.
Other than that this is a superb charector that I said in latter thread.

HI baby, i have one problem w/ ur modle, actually its his bow, i dont like the feather lookin thing on his bow, & honestly i know u need to work on hair so i would fix that before i started texturing. he's a damn good modle, but i would do that 1st & if u want i'll help u pose him. i looked at ur modle really hard, & noticed alot of hard work u put into it, im proud i even like the part under his arm it all looks good. lots of luck & ill help u w/ what u want to fix. (if u would like a 2nd opinion) i love u

I feel the exact same way, I think you need to pull up on the upper body. Keep it up! :)
