View Full Version : Sound in max is killing me!!!
Genesis 02-20-2003, 03:25 AM I am in MAX 4.2 and my sound has just lost its mind.
I am in max and have a sound file loaded, when I play the animation there is no sound, however if I scrub the time slider the sound can be heard. This is really annoying. I was using an on-board sound card, and have now changed to a external one, and I am still getting the same problem.
If anyone can give any advise of what to try/do to fix it I would be a happy man.
PS: Yeah, I know the easy solution would be to comp the sound after, and that is what I would do..... if I was not doing lipsync....
Damn.

Have you tried using Magpie to time your sound?

jadedchron: Because when you are doing lip sync, the only way to listen to it realtime is to load it thoough max. How else would you do it to get it to sync up? The final cut will be a higher bit rate and hence comped, but without a sound file to work from how would I get any timing!
3danim8d: Its a good program from what I have heard, must look it up sometime, I have a deadline to work to though, so no learning time for me!
I sorted my problem by changing the max standard sound plugin to an old freeware one one of the guys here had lying around (thank God).

You could do what the industry does and use SMPTE to sync the sound to lip movements. Both Max and Premiere support SMPTE time coding.

You need to make sure that your time configuration is set to real-time playback. Otherwise, the audio will not be heard when you press play.
Now, if you want better audio in MAX, check out Sound Trax at www.boomerlabs.com. Among other things, it provides more accurate scrubbing as well as audio support at 1/2x and 1/4x playback rate (ideal for facial animation).
BTW, was that old freeware sound program from Boomer Labs by chance?
