View Full Version : Rendering at 24fps vs. 30fps

I searched but surprisingly couldn't find any discussion of this exact question.

With the intended destination being NTSC DVD, is there any disadvantage to rendering at 24fps then doing the pulldown to convert to 30fps? There would be an obvious benefit in significantly less frames to render but is there any reason I might regret doing it this way in the future?

On the other hand what is the advantage of rendering at 30fps as some people do? I've heard better quality mentioned as a reason, but all motion pictures are filmed at 24fps and I've never heard of anyone being able to perceive any lack of smoothness. Is there really any discernible difference?

What frame rate is most professional keyframed animation rendered at?

Generally speaking....

30 (29.97) FPS is standard in CG/Motion Graphics/Broadcast

24 FPS for Flash (depending on what your doing) and 2D Animation

Thanks for the reply. Do you know why 30 is the standard rather than 24? Wouldn't it save studios money and time rendering at 24 then doing a simple pulldown to convert to 30 for the DVD? What would be the downside to doing it that way?
