View Full Version : A "what's the best way to do this" question: water related
FloydBishop 02-20-2003, 12:51 AM Hey gang,
I'd like to do an effect where a character quickly pops up from underwater, sending water splashing everywhere. I have some experience with both RealFlow and RealWave, but I'm not sure what the best method is for a case like this. Maybe I should skip it and just use Maya fluid dynamics combined with particles and an ocean?
I'd like to do something like in Rambo, where the character pops up from beneath the water.
Any suggestions??

Real wave/flow had a great thing where you could drop an object in water and it would create waves in the surface and emit particles which you could import into maya and render.

Reactor for max can do this you talk about...but then you'd have to use max for the rendering of that shot as well.....Why not just use soft bodies?

How do you see softbodies working in this situation, as I need to have the water splash up like real water? It is going to be a fast shot, so it will be a bit forgiving.
Maybe an ocean plane and a collision event that will make particles spring up when the object breaks the surface.
Again, the effect needed is the object coming up from under the water. Think of an alligator or crocodile lashing out from an ambush position under the water.

I was thinking More like resting Particles on the softbody surface....Can you do that?

So how would that work exactly?
Would I make the softbody, have the particles at rest on the surface, and then apply a force which would rip up through the center? What would that do during a simulation?
I have some experience with softbody and particle stuff. I did a snowboarding snowman who deformed the surface of the snow and shot snow particles up into the air.
My main concern is the look of the splash. I want to make sure it looks like water. I used blobbies from an emitter, and they look great as the particles emit, but as they seperate, they get so small that they disappear. Is there something out there that allows for this effect from within Maya?
I saw some fluid stuff on Highend, but I have yet to try it out.

I was thinking...Use soft bodies for the ripple effect..I guess it would be difficult to rest particles on the surface...what if you rested particles or particle emitters on the character....And the force of the character rising out and stoppping over the surface causes the particles to activate.......I really dont think fluid effects ..can pull off sutch a stunt...
Heres sort of an example.....

Does it need to be dead accurate?
If not, cheat. Cheat alot. Send a bunch of particles up in a birst around your Char. and comp in a lot of practical water splashes either completely in post or map them to planes in your scene.
for the water motion, perhaps a softbody will do - maybe you could even create good motion using well placed and animated fields...
Hide the water/char interaction w/ particles or foam or something...
In this case it may be best to experiment around, comp in a lot of practial water spashes and add in particles as needed...
Just a few thoughts...
