I am currently pondering whether to get ATI Radeon 1950pro AGP or NVIDIA 7800GS+.
I'm not upgrading my computer until next year, and I don't work as 3D artist yet.
I do play PC games though and those 2 video cards are currently the top of the range for AGP cards.

However, I heard that if if using gaming video card for gaming and 3D work, it's better to go with NVIDIA than ATI, am I correct or not? or is it the other way round? Or it doesn't matter? Can anyone enlighten me on this. Thank you very much, your input is much appreciated.

Everywhere I hear that nvidia cards are more stable with 3D work. But I'm no expert.

Nvidia is the preferable option. ATI cards tend to have buggy drivers when it comes to correctly displaying OpenGL. Not saying you will be problem free with either, but normally, Nvidia is the safer road.
