well, to me, the renderer came out w/it fine. it depends on which part you don't think looks good. you should take the one flat side and make that a planar and maybe try the rest w/the cylinder.. just a thot.

jadedchron, if you really can't see what qu2k's problem is, than don't reply. (And I advise a visit to a optician)
Anyway, qu2k, i don't have an idea either. :surprised You could check your map channel ID, you could turn on the Cap option (But that won't solve the whole problem) you could try it with a Planar UVW map (It looks to me that in viewport Max is applying a Planar map)

Martijn, if you don't have the correct answer I advise you not to reply. Uhm anyway, the cylinder is stretched obviously. Apply 4 planar maps and see if that is a workaround.
Or post the max file and I'll take a stab.

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Jadedchron, i don't think I'll need you to tell me what or what not to do. Anyway, thanks for all your correct answers.
noise map right?
type 90 into the z rotation value for the map. Procedurals aren't usually accurate in the vp (not sure exactly why)
cheers,
Phil
