View Full Version : Trouble with fire
SolGoodGuy81 01-11-2007, 10:45 PM Hi all,
I am having some trouble with fire using fluids. I have used an excellent tutorial(http://zgrachan.com/pages/intro.htm) to get the ball rolling and with some minor tweaking have achieved the look that I was after. However when I make the Cache and render out about 90 frames I notice around frame 60 the flame dies down dramatically almost to nothing and only one side of emitters look to actually be emitting the tiny flames. I have spent most of the day messing with the Fluid attributes and the Contents of the Fluidshape but haven't really noticed much of a difference.
I am just looking to make the flame consistantly burning. Which attributes should I be tinkering with? Is there a page out there that explains in general what each of the attributes does for the emitter and shape? It gets a bit confusing.

Fire in Maya behaves a lot like real fire, start by checking the render display, check out the fuel, temp, and whatever other attrs you think will help you error check the fluid. viewing your fluid this way gives you great insight as to what the fluid is REALLY doing.

yeah, i found the maya help docs have loads of good info too. lots of detailed stuff on fluids

Turn on velocity draw and have a look,... it sounds like your velocity is going crazy and blowing your fluid around before the samples in your cache have a chance to do anything with it. I haven't gone through this specific tut. but when your fluid behaves crazy like this, velocity , too much turbulence , or too strong of a feild could be to blame.

Thanks for the quick replies. I also think that it is a problem with velocity and turblulance, in a way blowing the fire out before it can keep going. I did search through the maya help docs on fluids and that did clear some stuff up and helped me look at it in different ways as you had mentioned Pyro. I haven't had much of a chance to work at it yet today, but I will get back at it and repost whatever happens. One question that i didn;t find an answer for in the help docs though, If i make the cache of my fire for 90 frames say, but i go through and change attributes, will it actually show up or do i have to delete the cache to see the effects? I know changing the resolution will ruin the cache, but other then changing density I didn;t see much of a change in the result when I change numbers with the fire in a cache. Thanks again, I'll try to post again tonight.

I have tried a few things to correct this fire problem, been busy with work so I haven't had much time to work with it. My setup I have for this is like this(in case anyone has other suggestions how to work it). Its pretty simple, along a wall i have a trough(sp) that I want to have fire contantly lit. It's only on one wall of the room and I have one fluid box with 6 nurbs tori in it, one next to the other. Each fire node has unique attributes so it is not all uniform and from reading the tutorial it seeems some of the attirbutes stack with each other so I have tried to adjust for that and spread it out over the 6 nodes. I took away alot of the turblulance and made another cache and i noticed some chage in the fires look but it still was "blown out" around frame 55. When i turn on Velocity draw the arrows start off pointing towards the outside of the fluid box as they raise up. Around frame 40 the arows start going in all directions and no uniform direction can be made out the frome frame 50-55 the arrows all begin to aim all together down and to the right. Its strange how this occurs, starting at the top left of the box they start to aim down and right, and this effect spreads to the bottom right cornor. There is still fire lit, but it doesn;t do anythign at all, just glows tiny at the bottom.
I am working on getting the movie file online so I can post it and show you what i mean but from this do you have anymore suggestions? All the displays(fuel temp and density) all show the same thing that the arrows are showing me.
There is no way to just view the fluid from frame 40-60 is there? Since each frame builds on the last one correct? It is very time consuming waiting for it to playback to frame 55 to see if the fire is extinguished  Thanks alot!
