Has anybody used vue to create an avalanche effect? I don't know much about the program, and we're having to do a rockslide/avalanche effect for a spot. I know it has volumetrics and such, but i don't know if it can pull it off. Or maybe a vue/maya combo would be best. What are your expert thoughts?

Mikeroy, I would think you could do that by animating rocks with a snow material and adding some animated procedural terrains; maybe one of the animation gurus around here could tell you. Check the stuff on this page to see what Darkside Animation was able to do:

Hi people,

I'm no expert nore am I a guru, but the way I have done it (kind of), is to use emitters (I am using Lightwave and xstream) But you could export your terrains and add some emitters to create the falling snow spray etc, using the exported terrain as a collision object for the emitters to bounce of as it rolls down the mountain. You could also create a second emitter and link a rock object to it, and have them roll/slide down the mountain along with the snow.

Heres a very simple render.
