View Full Version : photons and FG secondary bounce impossible?
i've been trying to see the affects of mixing secondary and third FG bounces with photons and it seems when enabling gi + fg secondary(or 3..4..counts doesnt matter) it simply doesnt do anything it acts as if FG is set only on default single bounce.
am i missing something, maybe a trace/ray count you need to enable?

you're right in this case multiple FG bounces is disabled. To have photons and fg multibounce would yield innacurate illumination.

Yeah, it doesn't work. Also, there shouldn't be a case where you would need both at the same time. Either you use GI to get the broad general GI and FG to fill in the details, or you use FG purely with the secondary bounces.

i've been testing and the results are different in each case. i do see a reason to use photons to fill in light where there are more than a single or double ray hit and color bleeding in some cases. giving lighting information where FG 2 bounce doesnt however with photons and only 1 fg bounce detail is not shaded as much as i am getting/aiming with fg2. i guess i will just make 2 indirect passes and composite them.
thanks anyway atleast i cant stop finding a solution as there isnt one.

When GI and FG are on, indeed the diffuse secondary FG rays are turned off because that would collect light doubly for those parts of the light path. To be clear, FG diffuse secondary bounces also do color bleeding.
I understand the artistic desire to create the light both ways and combine them, so I agree that the composite is the way to go.
I'd like more information on your settings, because it is possible that the settings may be interfering with some of the analysis here. For example, one thing that comes to mind from one of your comments is the possibility that your shadow trace depth is not set to > your secondary FG trace depth.
Which version of Maya?
