The only appropriate response to news of this calibre is to squeal like a schoolgirl . . .
"EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee"

sounds like munroe has some really good things to say, im definitely excited about a pg13 movie and definitely agree that there are alot of happy talky pictures and there need to be more action oriented cg pieces.

"Our owner, who is 29 years old, grew up with Gatchaman and Astro Boy, and artists like Kevin who have a great appreciation for this [material] said, 'You know what? Let's not do the happy talking pictures any more,"
I sincerely hope that this translates to the screen, and they retain the style of the original series. There's some excellent artwork stills and an interview with Alex Ross about the influence of the original series at ADV's official Gatchaman site:

If they want to do it right, they really should get either Umetsu Yasuome (character designer of the new version) or Amano (the original character designer. Yes, THAT Amano--the Final Fantasy guy) to play a part in the film.

I pray that they are faithful to Gatchaman and NOT battle of the planets. What a horrible american adaptation.

Whilst I agree wholeheartedly with this, what I find more unsettling is the thought that after this, Hollywood might decide to plunder all the classic anime series. Imagine what they'd do to Macross, Mobile Suit Gundam or Gunbuster.

AFAIK, the robot was added in the Western versions:
a) to provide a way to cut away from shots of violence in the JPN version (remember that at this time cartoons are very much for kids. "No one got hurt, they are just resting and we won they day"); and
b) to cash in on R2D2

Interesting. I've been keen on a gatchaman movie ever since seeing these commercials years ago:

Anyhow, I suspect they won't let SMAP anywhere near this one. Live action or not.

thats why our generation needs to get into the movie business so we can make faithful adaptations to our beloved childhood series.
