Hi folks,
¿Do you like Caravaggio?

I have updated my web and added a new work based on a paint of the great Caravaggio.
Apart from final renders and wireframes there are 9 high res details and a small making off.

Here is a direct link (http://www.etereaestudios.com/docs_html/fruits_htm/fruits_index.htm)

I hope you like this.
Best regards.
Cristobal Vila.

of course I like Caravaggio, and this is just impressive.

I think Caravaggio would be surprised to see how close it looks to the original piece.
Since you have such a great work there, I think it would be intersting to do an animation with some camera motion, just to show the audience that this is not Caravaggio's painting...

You are a killer....

How long did it took to render that scene ? :)

Must be nights+days because of the high polycount :bounce:

Thanks to all for your nice coments.

Chappo here are some numbers:

- Global Ilumination (GI in Universe is a faked, not real GI) + 1 main master light (5000x5000 shadow map) + 5 extra lights

- Aprox 700.000 polys

- 240 MB on bitmap textures (flatten .IMG, the native and compressed format in ElectricImage Universe) / 1 GB on master PSD textures with layers + Some EIU shaders

- Final render size: 5000x4000 px

- Type render: Phong

- Render time: 39 min fruits & basket (+ 4 min background)
- Without Global Ilumination: 16 min

All made in a Mac G4 733 MHZ / 1,5 GB RAM with Electric Universe 5.0

Frinsklen: I don´t want to make an animation. If you see at my site, there is not other point of view showed apart from the same as Caravaggio original (except in the making of section). Mainly one reason: respect to the master Caravaggio composition. This is conceptually a digital paint, not a dinamic work... Well, apart from these so serious reasons, I am working on another work ;)

Best regards.

Sorry Sheep Factory, I don't understand you (sure is my poor english).

What do you mean with BMP (2.5 bmp) ?

The linked image an all images on my web are JPG (or GIF for interface screenshots).

Argh, I'd hate to be another person in a long line of "Wow, that's great!" But...Wow, that's great!

At least I can use my favorite art history joke--if it ain't Baroque, don't fix it! (oddly fitting in this case, though I'm not saying it's true).

A true masterpiece. Your tutorials belong on a book! Very professional presentation on your website, inspiring work.

I love Caravaggio too and it is always a pleasure to see how his art is still apperciated by the new generations.

Really amazing, it's so beautiful, the light and the textures....whao. If you didn't see the wireframe, maybe i'll never believe that is 3D (really beautiful paint)!

Just a little question: Did you realised all the textures (photoshop, painter?), or did you used few pictures of fruts??? Because they feels very realistic.

Thanks! :applause:  :applause:

Caravaggio is truely a master and fully deserving this great homage. I have always been extremely impressed with your work and you continue to be an unending source of inspiration to me. With this work, there is no exception. I am absolutely speechless and extremely impressed. Bravo!!

Holy moly!!  This is pure art at its finest. Even if it's a remake of a painting. Mr Vila: you, along with Jeremy Engleman, are now my personal gods.

Frinsklen: a movie clip is totally superfluous since anyone in doubt can check through Mr. Vilas' fantastic "making of" section on his site. The best I've EVER seen.

39 min. is not bad at all !! i expected much longer...

Love your 'pure' render on your site... it didn't need any photoshop retouching IMO.

I also like your other (car) designs on ur page ;) :applause: WICKED !

First of all, Tito and all the CGTalk team, thanks for that CGTalk Choice Award and thanks for include my work on the Gallery Hall of Fame. WOW, it's great!

Thanks to all inputs of people. Your nice and kind words made me feel so happy!:)

Now I'll try to answer some questions:

- My background: School of Fine Arts (Barcelona), a lot of years working as graphic designer, illustrator and, the last 6 years (more or less) combining 2D + 3D design and 3D animation (visit my Studio > Personal section to know more about me)

- I have not used any fruits texture. All is painted and layered (10 to 30 layers each texture). However I like to use the DVGarage Surface Toolkit with lots of dirty, scratches and water damage (look at apple simplified process in the making-off process). The only real textures I used was for grapes-leafs as base for doing a lot of PSD manipulations.

- ElectricImage Universe is a little-known application with around 10 years of history. It has been used a lot on film productions (ILM and Disney use it) mainly for digital 3D asisted matte-paintings and animatics. It is not the best apply for character animation, of course, but there are a lot of surprises with it. Maybe is the fastest renderer (with a good quality, near to Renderman) and it's able to eat various millions polys and gigas of textures without problems.

Well, thanks again to all forum members. I'm going to make more works ;)
Best regards.
