Hi all..

This is a new character I'm working on for a short film (and, hopefully, a longer one..) About 9000 Polys, textured, GI_Joe with HDRI simulation... Give us your comments and crits!

~Callum

PS - it's supposed to be a little cartoony, a little realistic.. I'm not sure I've completely cracked it yet...

Hey Rebeldreams

I like the idea, but there are still some things that i must ad.

First, were is the nose? This creature is supposed to breath isn't it?
Second, the model lacks detail. It lacks defination. I don't know if that was what you were going for, but in this state it's more a cartoony character than a realistic one.

I like the textures and the colors, but also there i a lack of detail. Use some bumpmaps, more color and more defination.

But it's still in a working state so i think the model could look completely different in the end. Still, a very good start and kep it up. I think it can turn in something nice :)

Whoops,

It's supposed to be cartoony, i didn't read the text to carefully. Well, i think it still needs some moddeling work, the ears and neck need more detail. But it's comeing along nicely.

Thanks for the crits.. yeah, it's supposed to be cartoony AND realistic.. sort of aiming for something in between... As for a nose.. well... he doesn't have one. Perhaps he breathes through his ears or his skin or something... I knw - it's my idea, but hey, I like a little mystery... :hmm:

It has a bump map and spec maps and so on, but they don't seem to have turned out so obviously on the render.. mind you - it looked pretty clear when i did it.. although coming back to it, it looks much less obvious. I think I was a little too close to the suject. I'll have to increase the bump depth on the lil' fellah.

Ears and neck will have a little more detail put on them - neck more especially. The ears are more sort of bony protrusions rather than elegant cartilege things like we have.

More on the way in the next day or so... Keep 'em coming!

Hi all.. well, here it is again, remodelled extensively, and witht he eyes closed. Right now it's untextured, so bear with me on that one!

I decided to do it this way to make him a little "cuter" - it's supposed to be a children's film after all.. I thought he looked a little freaky before.

I added more detail to the neck and made the ears a little different, but they're still relatively undetailed, because.. well.. that's the way he is.

C&Cs please!!

OK, here is the final head, textured and lit properly.. same routine as the first one (HDRI Fake in GI Joe, etc, etc).

C&C welcome.. next stop - the body!

OK, we're getting there ... here's a body (just started). C&C guys? Anyone?

rebeldreams

...and another, textured (only a colour map so far - others to follow...)

C&C..? Please? I know you're out there; I can here you breathing... :surprised

Damn! Those eyes look real! Creepy!

rebeldreams

Thanks ytrabbit - alas I cannot take any credit for that texture - it's downloaded from Matt Wood's Site (http://www.mattwood3d.com/) - check out his site - awesome stuff. The final eyes will have a similar texture, but with a more "cute" cartoony look  . Right now the eyes are shut, to allow me to actually start putting facial blends together (which I'll start on once I've finished the model).

Let's see.. tomorrow it'll be hands, legs and feet time, followed (I hope) by clothes on Wednesday. Well, we'll see what wonders work has for me I guess.

C&C still welcome - I mean, this is why I post here!

Cheers!

Well, here's the latest one.. in lieu of any comments, I'll keep posting in the hopes that someone shows some interest...

Here's the "finished" article... because I'm going to be putting clothes on him, I decided not to put much by the way of detail on the legs.. the arms could probably do with a little more detailing, although I'm still trying to find that happy medium between realism and "cartoony".

C&Cs.. please?

i know its an alien and all but maybe making the lower part of the body (legs + feet) a little "thicker" would balance the model a bit more.....are u done with the texture or is it just kinda temporary?

wanna see more:buttrock:

The legs will be dressed in loose pants, but I take the point about making it thicker. I was just working on that a moment ago. That said, the feet are just "pegs" on which to put the boots, so I'm not too worried by them.

The texture is pretty much done for the face - the texture on the body is a little more temporary (colours are right, the bump mapping and so on is not done yet). I'm using GI_Joe for HDRI faking, so the details seem a little washed out. I'll start posting renders done without HDRI for detail after this.

Thanks for the crits.. Kepp 'em coming. I'm still working on this. I've just started on the boots, and then I'll be using Cloth for the clothing.

Started on the boots (temp textures) and the belt/sash thing (well, he has to hold his pants up somehow, right?).

I'm also posting the image without HDRI, so the detail can be seen better... Subtle bump maps seem to wash out completely with GI_Joe's HRDI fake...

Well, here it is, anyway...

Good work Rebeldreams...
but i gotta say, i prefered the concentration of colour around his eyes in the very first image!

..it draws you into his eyes more... don't get me wrong what you've got now is crackin! but it'd be nice to have a blend between the 2

i'm modeling a character with similar headform to your first char...i wish i could post a concept but i cant get my damn images small enough  ...but i love your alien char:buttrock:

Thanks for the encouragement guys - it really makes a difference knowing I'm not playing to an empty theater, you know? :)

Daveaustin - I think you are right on the colouration thing - I'll redo the colour map on the new figure, and bring the cream colour down so it's just over the "nose" and mouth of the character... the blue will really offset the yellow of the eyes, I think. I'm working on facial blends today, so I can lever those lids open again and see what's what.

Snakeman - if you have Photoshop, you can "Save for Web" and get the images compressed small enough to post...or you could send them to me and I'll compress them for you..? Whichever you do, I'm really looking forward to seeing your character :buttrock:

More updates coming today - I want to get the main modelling done today to I can rig it, put clothes on him and start really working him.

Back soon!

The modelling is really nice! Strange character

But i think the textures could use some twaeking. The sometimes look a little streched and they could use some details. did you make a bump or a specularity map? With some detailled textures, he'd be really cool.

its getting better, keep up the good work, it remind me michael jackson a little ;) maybe the nose

Thanks for the encouragement Ph.. I'm trying to get the right balance between a proper skin texture and too heavy/light on the bump map. Maya seems to delight in either having no noticeable effect when you apply the bump, or making his face look like he received terrible acid burns a decade ago...

I'm also trying out different lighting regimes, to try and get a realistic look to it.. The modelling's almost done, I feel.. then rigging. After that, the textures will get a thorough going-over..

Thanks!

Aiiiieeeeee!! Noooo!

Well, I kinda see what you mean, but the Peter-bloody-Pan of the Asylum was nowhere near my thoughts on this one.
Cheers! Now I'll never get that image out of my head!

Every charakter without a nose reminds me of michael jackson :)

I very often adjust the grey tones in photoshop... BBut i never had problems with maya an bump mapping...
