Title: Forest Troll 2
Name: Pekka Veikkolainen
Country: Finland
Software:

After painting the original forest troll in 2005, I had the idea of making a few more trolls. This is the first one to come out of my skethes. It is interesting to see what has changed in 1,5 years that it took to return to the subject. It's nice to see that I've become a lot faster and more precise with my painting, and I also love to be able to paint in way bigger resolutions than before, the original for this is around 9k wide.

Wow, I really like it.

Nice use of a painterly style, and the whole drawing holds together quite nicely.

Beautiful drawing

Awesome!! This is one of the coolest paintings I've seen in weeks. Dripping with style, character, and that whole story-telling element. You get 5 stars from me, and you go on my favorites list. Post more!

Pekka,

I love the painting and I love the stuff at your website. Wonderfully loose brushwork, use and sense of colour, cool designs, productivity, style... you name it! Nice to see such talent emerge from our beautiful country (still not snowing, though).

I really enjoyed your first interation of your forest trolls. This one has a great deal amount of confidence that I did'nt see as much from your first try at it. I would like to say this one has a much better mood, sense of scale, and intensity about the image from the first. Nice work, keep em` coming.

Now, that's one low hanging penis. On the other hand, what do I know about Troll Anatomy...

:D Hehe, sorry, could not resist. But to add something constructive to my comment. I like it, I always've been fascinated by the mix of innocence/beauty etc. with malice, wickedness and the like. I sense a hint of it in your picture, although it's not that clear here and I guess different people will respond differently to it. I like the fact that the whole scene is quite open to interpretations - the troll could be an evil monster feeding on little, innocent girls, or just a shy forrest creature, as surprised and scared as the little girl, who caught him at whatever he was doing with his pants down... (cough, but enough of that ;)) I like the feeling in this picture that ranges somewhere between "fairy tale" and "horror" (someone mentioned Brothers Grimm, yeah, that kind of fits, old fairy tales were originally darker than today's versions). But, dude, 9k resolution??? :)

P.S. - And, oh yeah, when I first saw the picture and just before I read the corresponding text I had to think about Finnland, too. But it might be because of the band Finntroll, though they are actually Swedes as far as I know. Well, whatever... ;)

Hyvaa kamaa! Onnittelut etusivusta myos :) En olisi uskonut tassa elamassa etta taalla menee etusivulle sellainen kuva jossa on turha nysvaaminen korvattu tyylitajulla. Nytpahan sekin on nahty! ;)

Engelska:

Good stuff mate! About the resolution, the saying goes you only get the details you paint in. Unless it's for print, I can't see why you couldn't do the same with 3-4k for example.

Rock on!

Hola!

Oops, thanks for the front page! And thanks for the numerous comments, everybody! And about my portfolio, thanks, though I'm about to throw a lot of stuff out in order the rebuild to whole thing with up-to-date material. Give it a couple months.

About the 9000 pixel resolution:

Photoshop handles the file fine, and I'm very used to flattening my work just to know I can't go back and I have to paint in order to go forwards with the image, instead of digging through old layers to find if something was better back 5 hours ago.

The good side of it is I never want to encounter actual pixels if I don't have to, so I paint big enough to even feel like painting and not pixel-pushing when I paint something like the small flowers. Also, there is no reason to paint something so small I cannot print it in years to come. Other than that, surely half or 1/3 size would have been sufficient. I'm so happy that it's not about counting pixels anymore, though.

crazybread: yeah sure, the painting always starts as something like 1500-2000 wide and quick brush work, but I usually crop the thing a few times on the run and double/triple the size at some point, in the end it's nice to know you can go really sharp with detail if need be.

shtl: I got a dual 2.41 ghz with 2 gb of ram, it seems to work fine for this.

And the daisies, they are actually a pretty plant called the Arctic starflower, a very pretty white thing to see in a dark spruce forest.

kryptoreye.. thanks! alas, still raining today. I hear Lapland hasn't failed us yet.

Hey goro! Can't really promise you a whole short film, but you'll see a couple more trolls in the near future. I have some ideas waiting for color run in the sketchbooks.

and droidoz: hell yeah more trolls!

Juho! Hey man, how's everything?

Juzz! Heyyyy!

funkyfoe: agreed!

d3cap, I'm glad to notice the progress! Painting the new one was so much fun.

fuss, for sure this troll isn't up to much good, at least if you compare to the first one who is just kinda bored and trying to blend in and go about his business in the woods. But I guess that's why I felt like doing another one, to see the same kind of scene play out with a hint of a different ending. In the first sketch of the first troll way back it was almost impossible to even notice the troll, so this new one is pretty much on the other end of the spectrum with the troll in plain view and definitely not ignoring the poor girl.

mikkok, kiitos, kiitos! joo en itsekään laskenu tän varaan.

yeah the trolls unmentionables.. I'm afraid that what started as a small dark shape in the silouette of the first troll sketch, will now rule throughout the series and oh my, how many different compositions will I be able to find with the weiner as close to the center of the image as these have it.. I better get a medal of some sort (=cardboard) when this whole thing is over!

I have some other things to finish but I hope to be back with these hairy guys after a while. Thanks again for commenting!

oh and mayazeus: I always worked with photoshop, usually I sketch black and white on paper though, to get a start for the screen.
