Title: Ocean Sunset
Name: Rory Lane Lutter

This was just a practice drawing. I wanted to have an opportunity to play with custom brushes which I am finally starting to get some use out of, and I wanted an opportunity to practice colored highlights and shadows.

The water is very well executed! The sand and sand castles? look good also. The texture of the sand s pretty convincing. The only crit I'd have is the sides with the sand castles, because at first I thought they were supposed to be rocks so I would've expected them to be a bit darker. Even thought they appear to be made of sand, maybe some darkening on them wouldn't hurt as the light from the sunset would be somewhat blocked out a bit. But otherwise a very soothing and take-me-there painting!

Thank you Angela for your reply. I think you've made a good point about the color of the rocks as opposed to the sand. Originally I just wanted a sunset scene, but I just couldn't help myself adding some ruins of some forgotten civilization... carved in the rock, eroded from time. I enjoyed drawing the waves. There's something about the flow of water that I really think is cool. I'm especially proud of where the wave has crashed against the rock and flowed through the gap. Mostly I'm still trying to figure out photoshop brushes. I see so many artists on this site who have achieved unlabored perfection through the use of texture brushes, and such a drawing represented an opportunity to depend on them. There would have been no way to do the amount of sand and rocks that I had to do in the time that I allotted without the use of texture brushes. Another aspect of my work that I was trying to figure out was the use of colored highlights and shadows. I've still got a lot to learn about this subject, but this was my first time drawing purple into the shadows and bright yellow into the highlights. Before this my work has been mostly monochrome. Thanks again for your reply :)
