View Full Version : Keyframe timeline selection
ChrisCousins 01-10-2007, 10:13 AM Hi - hope someone can help. Is there a way to make sure that the object selected in the timeline is the one that gets keyframed when I click on the make keyframe button, rather than the one in the object manager? It's especially annoying during camera sweeps as it's awkward to pan and rotate the camera with it selected, but keyframing another object (and undoing this keyframe) snaps the camera back to its original position.
I've given 'link to object manager' in the keyframe menu, but this is a pain too as it hides all the other keys.
Thanks - Chris

Would selection objects do what you needed here, Chris?
That way only those objects assigned to the selection object will receive keys?

Thanks Sammer, that sounds useful - however I'm still left with the problem of having to re-select the Camera in the object manager if I want to keyframe its current position; I was hoping it would be possible to use the Timeline selection to decide which object receives the keyframe, it's annoying workflow to have to hop around between scene lists.

Gotcha,
I think undo refreshes the scene... same for just clicking in the 'keys' area of the timeline...
Don't know if this will help or work with your workflow but; you can select a key on the lower half of the timeline in the animation palette and delete it without having an unkeyed item jump.... don't accidently miss though... or it's jump city... (I wish there was a way to make the animation palette bigger...)
If you make sure 'show inactive keys' is unchecked in the context menu in the animation palette, then you can use the OM to select item(s) to key but only keys for tracks selected in the timeline (Master, object or individual tracks) will show on the timeline in the animation palette and you can then delete them without the scene refreshing.
Hopefully that might do what you need. There are a few things that I wish happened differently with the new timeline but overall there is a tremendous up side to it.
Edit: I'm sure your aware of using Alt-drag to move the time indicator without refreshing the view (only in the animation palette not the 'timeline' in the 'timeline window') that may help, too.
Not too helpful far as not having to reselect items to key in the OM, maybe restrict to editor selection so you can only select items you want to key in the editor window, maybe?
Good luck,
Sam

selection object is what you want. next to the record and autokey is a key with a quetion mark, this should show any selection objects, choose the one for your camera and now the record button only records to objects in that selection object and nothing else.

Hi Kai - thanks for that, does exactly what I was looking for - I guessed there had to be a way. Thanks Sammer too, you had the right answer I just didn't know how to use it ;)
Cheers - Chris
