View Full Version : tearing cloth
wodagone 01-09-2007, 10:14 PM Help , any tips or suggestions for cloth solving solutions ??
I am experimenting with cloth setup on basic collision mesh with basic arm movements.
the simulation works fine so long as movement is slow ( quite unnaturallly so ).
when arm moves too rapidly the cloth tears off at elbow and then all way up arm.
Also when arm of cloth object (self )collides with side of jacket cloth it completely pulls everything to shreds.
I have :: increased res of mesh in stitcher
increased frame samples + reduced time step size ( varing different sizes )
best results come with Base Res = 200
FS= 9
TSS= 0.06 (ish)
But is taking 30-40 mins to calc 70 frames and 80 percent of time fails.
with does not support run-up error. I have spent nearly a week ( afterwork) fiddling with
variables and would really appreciate ANY input> Thanks, Dan

I can't say I have much experience with Maya's cloth system, but I wanted to suggest looking at Nima. It does some nice cloth tearing effects with very little effort. The simulations run really fast, too. I haven't used it for anything other than tests, so I couldn't vouch for it's usefulness in production. It's worth looking at, though:

Whooops, Just woke up and realised didnt attach image ..
No iam not trying to achieve cloth tearing. I am only trying to apply basic clothing to basic character. I am sure that maya cloth can handle this. I am just not applying correct variables somewhere .
thanks ,though i might have to look at syflex but i would rather not chuck in towel just because im doing something wrong.

try tweaking the solver scale aswell, maybe change to like 0.1, or may 10-100. Depending on the scale of your model.
Indirect the solverscale affects the softness of the cloth, for example a demin shirt that is 1cm2 is probably pretty stiff to wear:p

If you like, post/email your scene and I will analyse it for you.

THakns a lot folks , have not got time totry tonight im going to post file and would welcome anybody to rip it to pieces and tell me where i going wrong. Tommorow i will fiddle with more variables.
PLease excuse the bad modelling and crappy mesh of test character it is only for working on
cloth experiments with.
posting up my scene is not just easy option out but very much appreciated , cheers Franky boy
be back tommorow evening , Dan
ps. just briefly looked at Nima demo vids , looks effective and simple ( and free as beta )!!

mmmmm.. file size is 1.3m , too large to post.
Frankyboy , if you p.m. me or send me your email address to me at

Whoops,
My bad. I thought you were looking to tear up some cloth.
That'll teach me to post while semi-conscious.

When clothing an animated character you need to bake out your joint animations. Maya Cloth no likey no Bakey joints. If your joints are baked, then try adjusting your relax frame length. Once your cloth is simmed down, you dont need that attr anymore. Adjusting your solver scale and tesselation will also dramatically effect you sim time, the trade off is that it greatly effects the look of your cloth as well.
As for intercloth penetration look through the properties; thickness, and thickness force specifically. you can use one of the property material libraries as a foundation for your cloth, then tweak on the attrs as you need.
solver scale will not simulate thickness, if you want denim or silk, start with the properties. After that measure your character, based on its height in cm, you can set your solver scale. Solver scale determines how big maya thinks your cloth is.
I posted some other colission advice on a cloth post tonight, check it out for more details on cloth colissions. If you still have questions I would be glad to help.

THanks v.much for the response guys,
I have baked joint anim, adjusted thickness/force and other solver and stitcher attributes,
No matter how much I fiddle with variables, when the movement becomes too quick the cloth rips away and all hell breaks loose.
But its end of week, too tired to mess about now.
FrankyBoy has kindly offered to analyze my scene which hopefully will show up some fundemental fud ups.
F.B. i mailed you this morning at 6am it seems you didnt recieve. If you havent recieved mail+attachment i sent tonight please let me know, cheers.
