Nico van der Westhuizen is entered in the "Eon Challenge" update: View Challenge Page (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/eon/view_entries.php?challenger=12527)

Latest Update: Final Render: Thistledown

Yet another late starter to the challenge. I don't have the best computer system in the world, so hopefully my entry will be completed on time.

I have decided to work on Thistledown. Something about the idea of hanging cities just speaks to me. I should also mention I have not read the book yet - so I will be off on a couple of things.

My concept is basically to have a close up of some of the Hanging cities and
have it be shadowed in size by the arched structures.

These are some more hanging cities I have been modeling using Boolean operations.

To give the illusion of size, the hanging cities needs to get smaller
the further they are from you. So multi-replicate function will be used,
but the size will have to be reduced by about 95%

Also, I split the series of hanging cities into multiple files, so that I
can move stuff around without slowing my computer down. Later on I will merge
them all together. Of course I will need to place markers around so I know
where to put stuff. (Markers will be like spheres, cones etc...)

This is what I plan to use as the arched structures. Again Boolean
operations was used. I also plan to use some cubes and place them
randomly around to try and get an effect of a major city.

I see that the EON deadline have been moved to the end of the month.
This is great as I need more time for rendering.

Anyway, this is a basic city scape as a backdrop to enchance the image.

Here are the textures I used for my objects. All are found in
Bryce materials. I only had to change the color for the arched
structures from light blue to orange.

To get this great atmosphere, I tweaked & changed a couple of setting
from the "Turbulent Overcast" environment.

It gives the cities somewhat of a rusty look.

Looks Awesome.

Previously I mentioned that I had saved my work in multiple files
as to try not to slow my computer down. Well here are the scenes
rendered separately as well when they are merged together.

For the animation I have decided to animate the sky. It will be set
at 4 seconds and the size will be 320x240.

You should make the water surface move too.

it will make a better effect.

Yeah, I agree with SONIC-X

Just a gentle breeze. Would it be too much problems to get the buildings moving just a bit? It will make it more real.

Interesting concept :) !

Here is my final render for EON (Thistledown).

Best of Luck to everyone else.

Software: Bryce 5

Thistledown
For the Stone from space but perhaps not our space; it came from the
future - but perhaps not our future; and within the hollowed asteroid was
Thistledown. The remains of a vanished civilization. A human - English,
Russian and Chinese- speaking - civilization.

Thistledown City was astonishing... Here the Stone architects had
allowed themselves complete freedom. Treating the chamber as a giant
valley, they had strung cables from cap to cap and hung buildings from
them in graceful curves.
