View Full Version : Shading/Lighting Demo Reel
klingspor 01-09-2007, 08:54 AM Seeing as my colleague Reed Casey just posted his new Demo Reel (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?threadid=448020) recently, I thought I'd put mine up for show, too.
My reel features the projects I've worked on as a Shading/Lighting TD at Pendulum (http://www.studiopendulum.com) over the past year or so, some of which made use of my After Effects plug-ins Normality (http://www.plausibleimpossible.de/products/normality) and Reality (http://www.plausibleimpossible.de/products/reality). I've thrown in my favorite personal work from short films and other projects where I did everything from modeling, texturing and animating to shading, lighting and compositing myself.
Your comments are welcomed. Please enjoy!

Nice work ,I wish I could have been doing such work for such a reputed studio. If you want then plz share what sort of job responsibilities you have as a Shading/Lighting TD.
How much difference post production makes in your final render.
again very good work.

Or they are doing really high quality work, and want to show it off.
Either way, both your demos are amazing enough to get a job any where.

Nice work there. I'm just wondering which part of shot number 7 (the exploding building) belongs to your responsibility. I dont remember you've already been working at that time at pendulum as shading/lighting artist.. because I was - and the shading/lighting of that stuff was part of my job. Dont get me wrong, I neither want to spark a public flamewar nor I'm too proud of that work. Just wanted to clear that up, because I'm curious.

I'm just wondering which part of shot number 7 (the exploding building) belongs to your responsibility. Hi Florian, nice to finally meet you! The lighting and shading in the scene you questioned was redone after you left because it was using very complicated shading networks and we wanted to simplify things to get the renders to speed up. It probably didn't change much visually from what you had done, but the point wasn't to change the appearance, merely to speed things up.
I hope that clears things up for you, if not, feel free to PM me!
Cheers!

again very good work.My duties are basically taking a scene from the modeling/texture artists and then shading it up according to the style requested by the directors. Once I have shaders setup for each element of a scene, I take the final animations and apply lighting and, wherever necessary, shader tweaks on a per-shot basis. I then render out the lit shots and pre-comp them to be critiqued by the directors.
When it comes to final renders, I'm responsible for outputting all the necessary passes requested by the comp team, which generally includes beauty, dirt, motionblur-vector, shadow, matte and occasionally some rather esoteric ones.
Obviously post-production adds a lot to the renders because they are not meant to be viewed separately. Since we render everything in passes, the comp artists have a lot of freedom to make the rendered shots look just right and I keep that in mind when lighting the scenes.
Two reels from guys working at Pendulum in the past couple of days. Makes me think there's trouble over there. What's the story? No trouble at all, we just had some free time over the holidays to compile the work we'd done over the past year.

I think a shot breakdown would be cool to see, especially since there is another reel by your friend that has some of the exact same shots.
Love the reel though, great editing and interesting breakdowns. When you show the breakdowns though, it's unclear what you are demonstrating, it might be useful to mention what you did. Also the the mechanical ball that is sitting in the crater and shrinking is probably worth cutting, it's weird and hard to understand out of context.
Overall, very cool.

I don't think reconstructing shading networks and not visually changing a shot really justifies the use of it on one's reel. You didn't light the shot, you didn't shade it, so fixing some complicated shading networks isn't that reel worthy. Not to mention, knowing Mike and Rob personally, I know what "redo" means in their world =)
Nonetheless, good luck with your search, cheers.

well Bill, I know you like to be critical but you are in no position to assume you know what work was or wasn't done...but knowing you personally, I'm well aware that you are baiting us, and just takeing a shot at my studio-again. Whatever problems exist between you and my employer should not be brought up in this thread. Please let this be the end, thanks.

To clarify: I know the work and time I spent on the shot in question as the studio directors asked me to re-shade it with a completely different shading solution and relight it, and I consider that enough to warrant having it on my reel.
Bill: Having not worked on this project yourself, I'm confused as to how you are in a position to comment on what either I or Florian did, so I'd appreciate it if you didn't. If you have issues with Mike and Rob, or the Studio itself, please deal with that somewhere else and keep it out of my thread. Thank you.

You're original explanation as to why the shot was used:

Now your backpeddling response to my comment:
To clarify: I know the work and time I spent on the shot in question as the studio directors asked me to re-shade it with a completely different shading solution and relight it, and I consider that enough to warrant having it on my reel.
So which is it, you originally stated you changed shading networks to speed up renders and to NOT change the shot visually, or re-shade with a completely differeing shading solution and relight it? As you can see, it's rather confusing as you stated ;)
I certainly don't have to work on a project to know the details of it. If you don't want people commenting on your work, then don't post it on a message board where people can and will comment. As far as Mike and Rob go, it wasn't necessarily a negative comment I was making, just stating the fact that I know intimately how things work there.
Cheers.

Bill, no offense or anything, I've seen you around the place and you're an active and clearly well educated contributor to this forum... so what could you possibly gain from undermining someone else's thread? It doesn't really do much to say "Wow, here is a really cool bloke" :/

Heh, my intent wasn't to undermine anyone’s thread, it was a simple question and could have been answered in a simple manner. If he had clearly stated what it was that he did for the shot instead of getting extremely defensive and rude then I wouldn't have taken it for anything other than a misunderstanding. That's all there is to say about it, I want to be clear however, that there was no malicious intent on my part, just an inquiry as to his exact work done on the shot.
I see shots on peoples reels all the time with questionable material. Fully comped shots that someone modeled a barrel in the background, or some character that’s 4 pixels high running around or whatever. I honestly don’t care one way or the other at this point since he’s shown what kind of attitude he has about it, but I certainly don’t like seeing people taking credit for work they didn’t do, that’s all.
Easy rule: if there’s even the slightest question of whether you should put something on your reel, you probably shouldn’t, or you should at the very least explain in detail what you did on the shot.

@csmallfield: It is rather simple, really: Whenever you see the little Pendulum-Logo in the bottom right corner of the video, I was involved in the shading, lighting and rendering process of that shot. Where you don't see that logo, you're looking at purely my own work.
The other reel posted by my colleague Reed was a modelling/texturing reel, so it's obvious how our work differs.
@mimo8: I guess my lifestory could be considered pretty interesting, but it's also pretty long, so I won't be posting it here. Let me just point out that I only grew up in the countries mentioned in my About page (http://www.minning.de/about), I didn't necessarily work there. Was a bit too young for that... ;)
Let me just say that it's a great feeling having my reel shown on the frontpage of CGTalk! I wasn't expecting it at all, with my colleague's reel being plugged mere days ago. You can imagine my surprise when I came in to work this morning and had everyone congratulate me! I thought they were kidding... I really didn't think they'd plug a real featuring all those dinosaurs so soon again. :)
I really appreciate all the great feedback I'm getting. :applause:
So, if anyone has more comments or critiques regarding my reel that don't include random allegations and unsubstantiated slander, please don't let the forum troll scare you away from posting!
And I apologize for the derailing of the thread above...

If he had clearly stated what it was that he did for the shot instead of getting extremely defensive and rude...
Perhaps due to 'history' you read tense where it wasn't intended. I personally thought his response was in no way malicious or rude. Perhaps a little defensive, but to be fair, your "inquiry" reads more like an accusation. Generally, politeness would dictate that you follow up criticism with compliment. It's all about putting the "constructive" in there. I don't doubt you meant well, but the thread reads like you're stirring the fight, not anyone else. Lighten up! It's still Christmas*
*note: Christmas lasts until the tree comes down. Give it another 3 weeks ;)

Oh man, awesome work! You and Reed did a real good job on the Paraworld Intro, i loved it from the first second i saw it in final quality, really great work, it's a pity that the game didn't sell that good, was great to work on it. The other stuff is also great, really nice work.

Wow, good reel, and amazing plugins too...
Interesting background and story you have too... *lol*
"Deluxe Paint II on a 286 with just 16Mhz..." that means you are younger than me *lol* but we shared the same tools. Nice to read about your life. I started for real some good time before you on an Apple ][+ with primitive animation softs like "take one", and yep... it's an unbelievable change from those times. ( gee... " Reflections 3D, " how could you...? *lmao*)
Good to see your reel and your short movie too (Bagel 2). My short is still a "short" but the process now is a "long" *lol* Praying to finish it now.
Well... you do light well the scenes, and it's cool to know about Reality and Normality for AE.
Keep it up.
Wish you luck and cya,

nice reel i really like the paraworld stuff you guys did.
id like it a lot more if on each shot you labeled what you were responsible for or maybe a quick summary at the end.
Saying it in a forum isnt enough, would be nice for anyone looking at it to just play the video and have all your info about the shots on there as well.
cheers, keep it up.
