Okay, here goes... my first try on modeling a (somewhat) realistic looking human head.

http://www.edu.lahti.fi/~jusas/girl/girl-collage.jpg

It's just a WIP, I just slapped a quick texture on it and I'm puzzled with the hair... doesn't look too good, although it has quite the look I was hoping. Perhaps proper textures and opacity maps will make it look decent?

Any good pointers to tutorials about skin material and human face mapping?

Cheers!

The best advice I could give you is not to apply textures until you're absolutely done with modeling. Then once you've moved to textures, I'd recommend mashing your face onto a scanner (no, I'm serious) and using that as a base for a skin texture. Using photoshop (if you know how to), you can make your skin brown, white, red, yellow, whatever you need it for. For mapping UVs, cylindrical mapping can work quite nicely. Watch out for the top of the head and under the chin.

BTW, the hair will look good if you have a good alpha map. I wouldn't recommend modeling individual strands unless you're going for that nappy look.

Hiya:

There's only one skin tutorial that I know which is any good and thats at:

http://www.3d-station.com/Tutoriaux/tutoriaux.php?id=13

Unfortunately its in French - but you should be able to stick it through a translator.

One other small point - try making the irisis larger (the coloured bit in the eye) she looks scared at the moment. The top eyelid should slightly rest over the iris, the bottom eyelid should be just underneath it - you shouldn't really see any sclera (white bit) between the iris and upper eyelid and hardly any - if any at all, between the iris and bottom eyelid.

Translation:

Google translate that wicked French language (http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=fr&u=http://www.3d-station.com/&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dwww.3d-station.com%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26ie%3DUTF-8%26oe%3DUTF-8)

Otherwise check out the tutorials made by Leigh (http://leigh.cgcommunity.com/tutorials.htm) - these are outstanding!

Keep up the spirit!..

Update!
Changed the nose, they eyes and the general shape of the face. Here's how it looks now... still fighting with the skin material. And she definitely needs a new hairdo ;)

Hiya-

Coming along well - the skin tone is a definite improvement.

If I might make a suggestion - the bridge of the nose seems a bit low to me. From the side view the idented bit at the top of the nose should be about equal to the middle of the eyes. You might want to check this and move it up a little. You might want to pull the eyes together a bit as well - they seem a little too spaced out. According to Leonardo Da Vinci's canon of human heads, the head should be about five eyeballs wide. This doesn't actually work when you're looking at proper heads because it differs depending on gender plus there's individual differences there too but give it a whirl and see what you think.
