A CG animal movie... what a big surprise...
That said, I can imagine surfing fans getting a real kick out of this one. The waves look great, and quite inviting ;)

Isn't that whats so great about animation? Rather than have hyper realistic humans. Which a real human could act in.
Great site. The movie looks awesome too!

Hey I wouldn't judge this one so quickly. Surfs up has a great voice acting and a very unique storyline.

Also, to help settle an 'issit real or CG' debate, does anyone know if the surf rolling up over the end titles of the trailer (made out of black stones) CG? After seeing what a good job they did on the CG waves and spray and stuff I assumed that this end sequence was cg also, but oh no, apparently I am *sooooooo* wrong.... Anyone in production on this know for sure either way? I'd love to be able to wipe smug smirks off some faces one of these days.

wel i cant imagen that a movie that is released this long gets a follow up already, i mean common how fast can you think of a script and write one ?

Saw happy feet 4 days ago miself. I was quite disappointed about the sotry. The step animations were gureat and lifelike (it seems that it really payed off to hire that famous step dancer so that the animators could look at him... :) ).
Aniways, The waves look amazing, but for the rest we'll have to see when the movie hits the cinemas here in Europe.
The last animation movie that really got me entertained was hoodwinked (good story).

I didn't know this was the second movie in a trilogy. Has anyone seen the first one? Or did you think dancing and surfing are the same sport.

I wonder if the last shot with the wave washing the pebbles on the sand, is real or CG.
Hmmm, I'd say its probably real except for the logo.

lol when i saw the "poster" i saw "nemo madagascar n happy feet" all merged into one movie..
im already pissed off by the fact that a lot of cg animated movies have a lot of similarities but anyway i watch just to see the cg sea.. n i have to admit ... its not just beautifully render, its also beautifully "shot" .. i mean it feels like real surf videos , with high speed feeling , and "edge" sensation ^^ the team between animator and cg fluid tech have really big muscles lol
@dennik : im in the same position .. because the sea touching the sand feel way harder to do than big waves ... i hope its real videos .. otherwise it means that everything is possible now ( more than before ... hem )

There was a teaser for this long before Happy Feet was being advertised. I guess I'm the only one that actually saw it. While it doesn't look like an epic storyline I have to say that I am going to be seeing this before a fruity dancing penguin movie.

looking good, gotta luv those 1080p trailers :D hey i wonder if that sea surf at the end of the trailer is cg? nah I don't think so.. is it?
anyway I haven't gotten board of watching penguin animated movies just yet, although Happy Feet was a on the verge of dead boring, lucky they had robin williams in there. I think Flushed Away was my favourite 3d toon animated movie of 2006.

I can't answer about the end trailer shot, since i wasn't involved with that particular aspect. But, the tech team for Surf is amazing and have done some stuff with waves, water, and particles that have never been done before. I had fun working on Surf's Up, and I can say that the story is not derivative of another cg film, and if you think that Surf's Up is a response to Happy Feet, get real, this was in production for years.

About the last shot with the pebbles. Who cares whether it's live or CG? It's a title/credit shot for a trailer, I'm 99% sure it's live action. Kinda funny when I saw they used this, seeing as the rest of the trailer is ALL CG and looks SOoooo real. It's good to see that I'm not the only one who can tell the difference between the 2 mediums.

I think this movie could be a lot of fun, it's defintely on my list of movies worth going to see when it comes out (based on the teaser trailer only of course).
On the end shot, I just assumed it was real footage, on closer inspection I still think it's real footage, simply because it's damn hard to do foam like that well and the sand particulates and flow over the surface etc, also it seems it would be a bit too much of a technical job to do just for the sake of a tiny bit of typography that's only on a teaser trailer, much simpler to just go and film and composite together. Of course I'd love to be wrong on that.

regarding my interest in the end shot, on closer inspection it *must* be Live Action, but that is what is intrigueing about this shot. Could it be CG? if it is then its pushing the envelope further than anticipated with simulation and fluid effects.
Per-Anders: Yes, even the typography insert is easy to spot, this is a simple comp, but Im not so sure of the reason NOT to have a decent CG attempt at surf breaking on shore in a movie such as this when most of the dialogue would be taking place there...
Misery: why dont you cheer up? :D I care enough to ask the question, and yes im *sure* its not CG but wouldnt it be wonderful if it was? would take a keen eye to create that level of realism
CelticArtist: aha! then the trail is hot, surely by some 6 degrees manipulation you would know someone who knows the editor or compositor of that trailer who knows the answer whether that shot is fake or real? c'mon the answers out there...

Agreed. Good thing Culver City is so close to the ocean :)
I have doubts about trying to sell a surfing movie to a mostly landlocked population though. I worked on a descently rated console game that most surfers I know really dug but not too many people bought it. We assumed it was because most people don't live by the beach and as a result, they know/care very little about the sport or the lifestyle.

wow, sweet.
a story about becoming a great surfer while learning life's valuable lessons, and saving your family/other penguins in the process.

I agree, movies that focus on a specific sport are doomed to attract mostly that specific crowd. Personally coming from a non American culture, i have zero interest for any baseball, ice hockey, football, or surfing movie. Actually if there is one movie i ever walked out of the cinema in my life, that was a baseball movie.
Some sports you have to try yourself, and experience personally, in order to have some interest in a related movie.
In any case, i wish them good luck at the box office. I'll probably catch it on DVD though.

Very likely I do, but I no longer work at Imageworks, so my connections are kind of limited about finding out the truth. Tell you what, I've gotta call a friend there anyway, i'll ask him what he knows and if he can give me an answer, i'll post it, if i don't, just assume that he didn't know. There are plenty of people from Sony who read and post here, so maybe one of them can answer definitively if it's that important.
As for the surf interest, I can understand that, but the movie will be funny, really really funny, so I think that will pull in alot of people who wouldn't see just a 'surf' movie. It all depends on how they market it, how oversaturated they get with it, etc. You could very well be right though, time will tell.

hey, thanks, that would be tremendous. Was assuming that hopefully someone who may see this thread *was* in the know. Ive got my fingers crossed for a jubilant finding that its a CG rendered shot, (title stones AND sea surf over the sand) and a disapointed 'oh well, better luck next time' attitude if its actually live action. So not earth shatteringly important no, but would be good to find out either way.
