THE HARDCORE MODELING MINI-CHALLENGE!
Ray Harryhausen Tribute

Sculpt a creature (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creatures), a diorama (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diorama), or creature series based on the wonderful creatures built by animation master Ray Harryhausen.

Who is Ray Harryhausen?
From imdb.com (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0366063/bio):

"When it comes to motion picture special effects, there is only one name that personifies movie magic - Ray Harryhausen. From his debut (http://www.imdb.com/SearchBios?debut) films with George Pal (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0657162/) to his final film, Harryhausen imbued magic and visual strength to motion picture special effects as no other technician has, before or since."

.... (His name) becoming synonymous among sci-fi and fantasy film aficionados with top-notch special effects work the remainder of their respective careers. After three sci-fi monster films and work with Willis O'Brien on an Irwin Allen (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000740/) documentary, Harryhausen did the effects work for The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0051337/) (1958), his first split-screen film shot entirely in color, which was highlighted by Harryhausen's mythological monsters interacting with Kathryn Grant (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0335497/), Torin Thatcher (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0857147/)'s flavorful performance as the villain and the rousing score of Bernard Herrmann (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0002136/).

Because Harryhausen worked alone on his stop-motion animation sequences, the filming of these could often take as long as two years, the most famous example of the kind of patience required being the exciting skeleton sword fight sequence in Jason and the Argonauts (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0057197/) (1963) (his most popular film) in which Harryhausen often shot no more than 13 frames of film (one-half second of elapsed time) per day.

The 1960s were Harryhausen's best years, among the highlights being his reunions with dinosaurs in Hammer Films' One Million Years B.C. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0060782/) (1966) and The Valley of Gwangi (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0065163/) (1969). His pace slowed in the 1970s, but he produced three of his masterworks during that period: The Golden Voyage of Sinbad (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071569/) (1974); Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076716/) (1977) and Clash of the Titans (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082186/) (1981). It was not until 1992 that Harryhausen finally achieved film immortality with an honorary Oscar, a long-overdue tribute to the one name that personifies visual magic

Because of his outstanding contributions to the visual effects field, and helping to lay the foundation of the modern VFX film, Ray Harryhausen has been chosen as the first vfx master we will tribute.

There are three ways to participate:

Single Creature:You can pick whatever creature you wish from the attached list at the end of this post.

Diorama: You may sculpt the creature inside the appropriate environment.
Some diorama examples:

Medusa inside her temple (Click for site/video (http://theseventhvoyage.com/medusa.htm))
The giant Talos chasing the Argonauts on the beach... (Click for site/video (http://theseventhvoyage.com/talos.htm))
The Skeletons fighting Jason and the Argonauts

Creature Series:This type of entry requires you will try to do as many creatures as you can from an individual film.

Bust :This type of entry requires you will try to a bust of your favorite creature, or a likeness of the master himself.
For example you may choose to sculpt as many of the creatures from the film Clash of the Titans as you can: Calibus, Pegasus, Bubo, Medusa and the Kraken.

THE CHALLENGE:___________________________

Sculpt one or more representations of Ray Harryhausen creatures in 1 month (See the provided list). The idea of this "mini-challenge" is to simulate an impossible dateline for a project. The artists will have at their discretion how detailed the models they will be working on, and the amount of models, and if the models will be shaded/ rigged. But the model will have to be Ray's interpretation.

For example an entry might call for a Medusa, but the artist will have to sculpt a Ray's screen interpretation from the classic film Clash of the Titans.

A big part of the challenge is that the modeler will have to scavenge all the reference for the film models. But at the end of the challenge the creature(s) have to look like the one shown on film.

CAN YOU DO IT?

What is the HARDCORE MODELING CHALLENGE?

The idea of these HARDCORE MINI CHALLENGES is to push the modeling skills participants while learning from the past. To get past preconceptions of the limits of digital art. To push digital artists into the world of sculptors & artisans. But we will have variety on these mini challenges. Sometimes we will sculpt a model based on a masterpiece, but on other times we might do Jet fighter or a landmark....

The only thing that will be consistent is the SHORT DATELINES.

At the end of the challenge, the participant should have a finished collection of entries. Keep in mind contest of high difficulty you will have ONE MONTH to do the challenge, but the rewards, even if you don't win, will be your improved skills in speed and accuracy.

EVALUATION CRITERIA:______________________

Detailed RESEARCH, and attention to detail are key for ALL entries. Please before doing an entry do your homework.

The best model will be selected by an open vote
for these categories:

Most Accurate Creature Representation

Best Diorama
Best Render
Best Creature Series
Best Bust (if we have more than 2 entries in this cathegory)
Highest Number of FINISHED models
Best Overall Entries
The winner will get bragging rights and a small banner
designed by me.

The WIP should be posted on your personal WIP thread. This thread should be used for final entries.

Hey Roberto, im a litle bit confused about how we should submit the final images, i know its a litle bit earlier for it, but i sguess is no harm to ask it now.
If we are doing a diorama composed of more than one model, should we submit the ortographic images of each model, or the orthos of the diorama itself?
You know, since Ray was an animator, it would be really cool if we could do an animation tribute to him on the animation challenge later, perhaps using the models we making here.

If you are doing a diorama you should submit an orthographic rendering for EACH model in the diorama. Also you should supply orthographic renderings for the diorama.

Depending on the participation I might do an animation challenge in the FXWARS forum.

Yo roberto, just wondering, the previous challenges required pure modelling as one of the rules. Will sculpting apps like Silo, Mudbox, and Zbrush be allowed for this challenge? I haven't seen any mention disallowing them in this ruleset, so I'd just like to clarify. I might hop on if they're allowed. Great topic, btw. :D

You can use any modeling app.
So Silo, Mudbox, and Zbrush are cool.

A rare oppurtunity for me. I am a big Harryhausen fan and I have soem time to really dig into this one. Where shoudl I start... That is the question. Dinos and monsters oh my. I will have to look at my video and think on this. I feel at a disadvantage without sculpting tools but not to worry I will make up for that. This is too cool. I got into animation and suchlike because of Ray. My school named a classroom after him, which is where I spent about 40 hours a week most semesters. I even met him when he came through our school on a book tour. What a great idea for a contest.

Hi everybody,

Great challenge, i haven't posted often on CGTalk from a lack of time, i'm really amazed/inspired by the proffesional work done by various artists on the forum, since there's still allot to be learned from now on i'll be participating more often, being a huge fan of Ray Harryhausen myself i decided to enter this challenge, wich is my first CGTalk challenge ever, probably going for the Harryhaussen creature bust, the diorama and multiple creatures seem like a daunting task, other then that, good luck to all of you..! i'm off too get some sleep.

Take care

Wow, I just found out about this today. I think I have to get in on this! Ray has been a major influence on me and my work. Unfortunately this is one of the busiest months that I have had in a long time but I guess I could go without sleep for Ray. I can at least do a bust and it will have to be the Cyclops, one of my all time favorite Harryhausen creations. Hello Mr Baker,
in order to participate in
you just need to post a thread in the main
Hardcore Modeling Challenge (http://forums.cgsociety.org/forumdisplay.php?f=208) forum.

Just call your thread:
HARDCORE MODELING!: Ray Harryhausen Tribute: Cyclops (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=208&t=449825) and post your WIP in it.

When you are done, just post your final entry in this core thread.

I am looking forward to your entry.

Hi everybody,

Hope i made the deadline for the Harryhausen modeling challenge, not sure if it was either 15-02-2007 or 28-02-2007, haven't had much time to work on my entry, i'd love to do some texturing work but unfortunatly i won't make it in time, tried to stay as close as possible to the Harryhausen version but it turned out a bit different, basically changed the shape of the mouth, added some teeth and the horn on top of his head, if i understand correctly the final renders should be rendered at 1600 X 1200 OR 1200 x 1600 in JPG format, and the smaller 800x 600 OR 600 x 800 image should be posted on the threads, so after 1001 crashes, virus attacks, a couple of all-nighters, 10 bags of nacho chips and some diet coke, i finally present CGTalk my "piece de resistance", et voila..!

This is the Sinbad/Kali fight scene from The Golden Voyage of Sinbad. Kali was the creature I remembered most from watching those movies as a kid, so that's why I choose her.
There were two Kali models used in the movies, there was a full sized one which was actually on the set with the actors, and a miniature that was used for the animation.
The full sized one had a lot more detail so I was making a version of that, rather than the miniature.

It's all Lightwave, with some mudbox sculpting for Sinbad's clothing. It took a couple of weekends and some weekday evenings.

I'm going to have to call this done as I have other commitments that I have been ignoring to do this challenge. I just had to do something for this challenge as Ray Harryhausen has been such an influence on my life, as he has been to so many other especially of my generation. The Cyclops from the Seventh Voyage left an indelible mark on me as a child one that has stayed with me to this day so, I chose to recreate it. I worked on this for about two and a half weeks. Working between 6 to 10 hours a day. It would probably have taken less time if I new what I was doing. This is the first time that I have ever modeled a full figure from scratch. I learned a lot and had a blast doing it. I used Modo for the base mesh, created the displacement, bump and color maps in ZBrush rendered in Modo ,and used PhotoShop to composite the renders. I hope you like it.
Here is the full sized render http://www.monsterbaker.com/monsterstuff/Cyclopsfinal.jpg
here is a turntable render http://www.monsterbaker.com/monsterstuff/cyclopsturn.mov.zip
here are the ortho views http://www.monsterbaker.com/monsterstuff/orthoviewsfolder/
Here is a closer different version more like what I was originally thinking of doing thought you might want to see

This is my first Hardcore modelling challenge. I decided to enter because of the topic.
I love the Ray harryhausen movies, specially "Jason and the argonauts". There are three things that shocked me when I was a kid and watched the movies: Medussa, the scene with the skelletons and the giant of stone. So I made Talos. I even thought that it was a real scale statue the first time that I watched the movie, hehehehe...

I've used 3D Max, ZBrush and Photoshop. It took me around 15 hours (I thought that the point of these challenges was the speed so I did my best to finish it quickly), plus a few hours for the renders... yes, a few hours for these renders... I have a very slow laptop.

Thanks for comments and viewing my renders and sorry if I didn't change what you thought it was wrong, I didn't pretend to make a 1:1 copy of the original.

I had a lot of fun making this model, good challenge!

Good luck everyone!

Well here's my finished model. It was great to pay tribute to Ray Harryhausen and I learned quite a bit in the process so it was well worth it for me. It took about 80-100 hours to model, texture, rig and render...I didn't keep track so that's just an estimate. All the modeling was done in 3dsmax and Zbrush and the textures I created in Photoshop. I wanted to choose something I wasn't familiar with so chose the Grand Lunar...plus I got lucky and had pretty good references in a book I had. The Grand Lunar was behind a force field in the movie, so where I had questions I used the other Selenites as reference and tried to keep it as close to Ray's model as I could. There's been a lot of great work in this challenge, so good luck everyone.

Dave King completed entry / Single Creature / Medusa / Clash of The Titans

This character was done in around five or so days, spread out from Jan 18th through to tonight. The aim was to recreate Rays original maquette from Clash of the Titans- complete with dodgy latex skin (note the fresnel reflections to make it look like rubber ;) and dinted clay underbody). The model was done in 3dsmax 9 32 bit and detailed in Zbrush. Photoshop was called in for texturing and compositing. I set up a little weblink at visit http://www.daveking.com.au/gallery/medusa/medusa.htm (http://www.daveking.com.au/gallery/medusa/medusa.htm) where you can link to all the hi-res images and turntable.

OK I am way out of my league here but I will at least show off one of my entries. This is the Ceratosaurus from 1,000,000 BC all poly modeling in Wings 3D. I'm not equipped to compete no displacment painting and other stuff but had some fun doing it all old school. Trying ot capture the Harryhausen look and nto an accruate dinosaur he had the limitations of his medium. (also my modeler does not render worth a darn so I am showing some quick no texture renders for the Front side etc. and a beauty shot.

The Diorama I did was from "The Golden Voyage of Sinbad". I decided to model the cavern in which Sinbad Fights Kali. I have been working on this for a couple of weeks. I modeled the cave and Kali. The reference I used came from the Harryhausen website and some video clips of the fight scene which helped to determin what the cave looked like. The model was done in Maya 7, and Photoshop for some of the textures.

She's a talented, focused, fast modeller. We partecipate to this challegne and we learned a lot (finally we succeed in a good zbrush displacement). I learned about human modelling and I hope to have helped her in a bit of rendering technique and materials. I also want to congratulate with the other partecipants the did a great tribute to the master ;)

Here is my rendition of Ray's Medusa in her temple. I used Maya for all of the modeling, lighting and rendering processes, while all of the texturing was done in Photoshop. I spent approximately 20 hours on the project (though I do not have a definite time, as I didn't keep track). Unfortunately, I didn't see the requirement for orthographic shots, so the model was only fine tuned from one camera angle... the ortho shots are not the prettiest.

This is the first hardcore modeling challenge I've entered, and I look forward to doing more.

Here is my first hardcore modeling submission ever. The minute I saw the title of this thread I had to do something. Despite having work, I was able to put in about 40 hours spread out across 2 weeks. I know he's not as done as I want him to be, that's why I plan to revisit this model in the future. I did the modeling, texturing, and lighting in LightWave, and created texture maps in Photoshop. Without further adieu, here's Bubo:

Alright, i will call it done, now i will start to animate him, hopefully will hv something by sunday on my whip thread.
This is my second time participating on the hardcore modelling, and again i had alot of fun doing it, i hope if time allows me, to participate often. This project made me learn a buch of new things, and if i had more time the model could hv being better.
I started this contest with an idea, and by alot of restrictions i had to adapt the original idea in order to participate on the contest... there was a time that i almost drop off, if not by the supporting words of you guys i would hv droped, im glad i didnt.
The modeling part was fun, specially cuz i wanted to make it all max, the rigg was a nightmare and i learned aloooot with it, the texture was a really rush as i started it yesterday night and had to finish it soon ( thats the reason of the poor background aswell ).
I cant predict how many hours i spent on this, cuz i almost droped it off and started a new model ( the hig poly one ) as u can see on my wip thread, also a big part of the contest was researching how i could do his rigg, but if i would guess, i would say 60 hours.
This contest has alot of talented ppl, and i hope to see all of them again on the next ones.
enouth talk.

Hi all, quick note to thank those that added their comments and words of advice in my WIP thread, much appreciated. I used 3DSMAX8, zbrush, and photoshop CS2. This took really, really long to complete, almost the full alloted timespan. It took me so long as I was in the process of learning more than actually working on the model, and lots n lots of trial and error. I am happy with the final result for this project, hope you like. As I mentioned in my WIP thread, it was my first zBrush work, as well as my first really terrible attempt at a rig, as well as my own painted textures. Roberto,
Here's my link to the 1600x1200 image. This is my final still entry. All software info is at this link:

Model took most of the month to sculpt and RIG. Aside from work it's pretty much all I did for the month in my free time. I'd say there's at least 80 hours in the effort.

I won't be able to complete the animation I planned for the challenge. Ran out of time. I plan to continue with that after the deadline. I'll post a link for that too when it's ready.

Thanks, everybody, for your encouragement, support and for an amazing opportunity!
