Title: Maya8 mocup (copyright AUTODESK)
Name: Loïc E338 Zimmermann
Country: France
Software: Maya, mental ray, Photoshop, ZBrush

Hi,
long time no post...
I made this image this summer for Autodesk's maya8.
I had to fit in the new Maya logo, this explains the proportions and the pose. Pretty heavily art directed one would say.

anyway... here is the monsta.
i had some feedback from Maya users, but this is (i guess) the best opportunity to get your opinion guys. Hope you're not tired of it already. Well... let me know.

And happy new year, CGtalk & CGtalkers ;)

very good image.
Mabey it`s a foreshortening from the camera angle, but the arms seem rather small for the body size.
The wings have a really good texture .

I don't like the size of the arms and maybe the body would have been a little bit more dynamic, if you had thinned it starting from the 'pelvis'.

4 *!

Hey loic

as always a wonderful piece but i have to agree that the arms/front legs look kinda odd.

Composition and colour palette as always are outstanding !

seems 2D or painted to me, i don't like arms. I think they should be stronger for such an animal.

The render would fit an animation render and i would gladly see it~

This is the image that actually helped me accept the new Maya logo. The depth and intensity is phenomenal.

DenisaMrackova : thanks.

lasmarcos : hey! yeah, considering it was a dragon, my goal to to get this feeling of old school fantasy i enjoyed so much as a kid

brentagain : the arms are indeed small. Let's developp a bit this point, since many of you refer to it:
Initially, i was going for a totally different angle and for a very very long, "asian like", dragon. So i wanted to add two other limbs.
On those asian dragons, arms and legs are really small (crying freeman), and the body is endless.
Unfortunately, i had to fit in the logo, as i said previously. it was then impossible to keep the legs.
This is why, (and i understand you) proportions may seem a bit weird.
not my idea. But when you work for such a big company, you have to fit in a global communication approach. It's interresting too. you need to turn constrains into a game, and find your way through.

Ossyffer: thanks. Colours are mine! yeah!

edcorusa. i was free for thepost treatment, which explains this 2d feeling that you can see in most of my works.
Thanks

Scala : hi Eric. Glad you like man! 2007 shall rock.

AlexC: You're not the forst one to point at this specific problem. Who made the pict. Credits are hard to find. damn...

GinoLatino : fit in the logo. fit in the logo...

bearfoot: merci ;)

Ariaans : glad you like the athmosphere, this i where i was the freedom was.

Hyst. Basicaly, all the details where in the textures. Post Fx in photoshop where all about incresing details, enhancing contrasts and textures. With more time, this would be achieved in animation as well.

kenwas: thanks.

gusss: not CG like is what i want to get, all the time, since it's not the point for me.

Mr positive: glad it helped. hahaha.

thanks for the comments so far. keep on :)

Wow. Great work. I've had something like that in my mind for a long time. I need to find time to complete it. Again love it.

Very nice though it's a difficult one to look at objectively having seen it so many times. How long did it take you?

I agree with the others, the arms look weak. I'm so much more used to dragons having long necks. It's iconic for dragons, but maybe you weren't going for that, then its fine. Good job.

vlad74 . good luck for your project. thanks

AlexStratulat, ashena145: thanks dudes

siouxfire: Hard to say how long it took me. work was splitted onto few weeks, waiting for approvals each time.
At once it would have been a matter of a full week i guess.

LATROMMI-SUINEG: thanks

cloudking. I replyed on that already. For the neck thing and about doing a dragon today; considering it has to be like the other dragons seems a bit strange to me. What's the point then?
For me a dragon is a geant lezard mixed with a horse. For the neck, i wanted something massive.

niice work my friend, he has a little Dark Crystal look in his shapes, but in a more reptile way.. just love the tiny arms, it gives an impression of a mutated creature, something that grew up in a strange way :)

Hey hey! the prodiguar son is back :)
Hi Pascal; glad havin' you here. long time no talk.

For sure i was going for an old school look in this one (as always one would say).
I like the idea of mutation, hybrid creatures are by far my favourites. And a i said in a previous answer, having to deal with a dragon means you have to face a tough past and tons of interpretations. Finding your own in this mess is not an easy task.

btw. i think i already told you, but i really like what you did for Max; that was a tough job and you prooved you were the right guy for it (i hate what i did with the snakes ;) ).

Wow! I'm really late to the party...LOL.

Loic, I don't know if you remember but I was the guy on 3December The-Area website that gave you the third degree questioning and you gave me advise etc. I have been in-love with this image since I first seen it and was telling you (I think) that I wish you had it posted or written about in other areas since you seemed to be very-uncredited for this image.

I didn't realize you got it posted up here after that. I was just doing a quick portfolio search for my favorite artists to see any new work and found this thread. SUPER COOL!

5 Stars from me and NOT a smidgen less. I look forward to opening Maya just to see this image. When you gonna talk Autodesk into giving it too me for a wallpaper or something : )

Anyways, sorry for being so late. Great to see your still rockin with your 3D/2D'ness that is so original!
