View Full Version : It seems that wings3d 0.98.07d doesn't exports to .3ds format
Xaint 02-19-2003, 02:27 AM It seems that wings3d 0.98.07d doesn't exports to .3ds format. Am I right or the problem are in my computer (or me)?
I can make it with .ndo importer, but it lacks the respect of hard edges and materials. Maybe an .obj to .3ds converter would help, but I haven't got such a utility.
Tips to import wings to MAX are appreciated here.

You are trying to export to .3ds with a complex UVW map aren't you? I haven't had any problems exporting just a base mesh to .3ds, but max isn't liking complicated maps I create in wings.

I get surprised very often with this...many good maxers (I have used it for work, but I don't consider myself a real user) do not know some of their best plugins...Inmho, one of the best strenghts of max is its plugins and maxscripts...Many are frree.
Like this one :
OBJ import and export plugin, freeware. (perhaps 4 version works for Max5, I don't know)
Max4 version
http://www.habware.at/duck4.htm
Max3 version
http://www.habware.at/duck3.htm
Tested, and works like charm. It brings smooth groups or an overall smoothing value. But read well the doc that comes with it, and test checking unchecking its options to see how things vary, it is very important.
Obj supports a lot of modelling features, like hard edges (smoothing groups, probably, once exported from Wings) , keeping the exact smoothing value, uv, materials, (names, colors, texture asigned...), big number of polygons, etc.
Export as OBJ from wings, then. :)
Hope it helped.

Well, thank you Sisyphus! Now, I know. I hope this'll help.
In Wings I choose to export to .3ds and no file will be created. This happens! (or shiT) But why?

There"s problems with .obj import too. I get this (as good as .ndo imported stuff). Maybe wings messes up with .obj output. I used MAX 5 for this, and the plug is for R4, but this shouldn't be a prob.
Any tips?
Maybe an .lwo importer?

Try quadrangulating, or triangulating the object first before exporting to an *.obj, the *.obj importer for 3dsmax might not handle n-gons properly ( I know some other programs such as K3d don't ).

Looks like...well....normals are inverted. You can flip them easily in Max. that shouldn't be a problem. I get that in many package exchanges...
Besides, feet (which do have normals OK) seem to have lost smoothing value (in case yo gave any inside Wings) That also is just a push of a button in the modifier...
Probably once you invert the normal in the resto of the body, you'll have to apply the smoothing value or s. groups to the whole...
besides, seems you made the model with several objects, and max is showing it did not loose them...
Btw, sometimes the lost of smoothing normals value is not real...but that the model gets broken. That'd be worse. If applying a weld target (and the threshold is not as big as to join vertices you don't want to join) the smoothing value (of 80, 60º, whatever you applied in Wings) does come back automatically after welding the model (or better to say, each piece, you may wish to treat every piece spearately, to not join objects) then it was that, the model was broken face per face. Let's hope is not that. if you planned just subdivide the model in Max, you probably did not care about smooth shading in Wings, and that's why it does not have it.
edit -- I hope you didn't read the post too soon...I wrote "doesn't come back" when I wanted to write "DOES come back" , which totally changes the explanation...

The mesh is low-poly, thus build of triangles and have smoothing groups (harde edges in Wings) and materials too - as the 1st pic shows. Vhen I import it to max it's not broken to faces, but has lost smoothing groups, and got grey & black materials from somewhere.
Sisyphus, If you'd like I could send you the wings file, and see what you can do about it. Just give me your e-mail adress.

ok, no problem :) I have wrote you to that address, so you can reply me with the model.
I'm curious already ;)
Try to zip it...I can recieve 1mb emails with no problems. And have now bout 5 mb free space in the account. Probably I can also recieve a 4 mb file too, but try to do it at 1mb maximum.
The email address was ended in hu...i mean, I say for if teh smiley was part of the address...
