I know there is a great list of many tutorial sites on 3ds max 5 in a post above: Tutorials Galore : but there are so many there are many that suck big donkeys :-)

What sites do you think are good for beginner tutorials?

The manual. Read the tutorials that came with the manual, and you'll be right on your way!:D

Hmmm... my first post/reply here at CGT.

I would have to agree with 'erilaz' that the manual is the first and foremost step one should take. The MAX install has the supporting files and the complete install would allow for the tutorials to be loaded and available from the help menus.

As far as 3D Buzz goes; nice site and seemingly full of material. However, I have found some of the tutorials rather simplistic and not well applied (meaning they do not setup the value in what they offer a MAX user). Many links are broken and the report link function seems to be ignored.

The best bet, if tutorials don't work, is to sign up for a class :D .

Well, links may be broken, but the tutorial links always work. As far as 'simplistic' that would be the whole point. They're beginner-intermediate tutorials. It may just be me but I learn alot better by watching someone actually doing the material and then explaining WHY they did it; rather than words infront of my face. The max help file doesn't offer that. It's a wealthy resource of course, but it's very daunting to a beginner.

yes i agreeİ i thin kit is better to see soemone do something and then explain why they did itİ but it also boils down to how you learn bestİ if you can learn better by readin the manual then do thatİ if you learn better by watching videos then do thatİ

Continuing Ed courses or full-time certified schools are the best way to go about learning. You can do it in person which helps with social skills or maybe try finding a school that will do correspondence or on-line. It's worth a lifetime of on-your-own-tutorials imho.

The tutorials that come with max 5 are good but once you have done some of the easier ones they go stright to very hard ones like character rigging but they are good if yyou follow them word by word the best way is to find as many tutorials as you can try searching google.com for them as i get some good results also i think 3d cafe has some of the best tutorials i have seen imho...
By the way imho means In My Honest Opinion.

IMHO *could* mean that but for most it means In My Humble Opinion.

Btw, 3D Cafe do have some good tutorials but the majority of them are dated (old) now. Google is the best place to hunt them out. And don't forget your local library or Amazon.com.

Yeah they are pretty dated but they all work and i always use them, also if your going to get a book from amazon.com or anywhere get 3ds max 5 fundamentals i got it for £25 and it is the best excellently explained tutorials iv ever read and the depth it goes into like the explanation of lights and textures is amazing highly recommended.

Yup, I second the 3ds max 5 Fundamentals book. My wife gave it to me for Christmas and I'm still working through it. Love the chapter on texturing and using UVW Unwrap. A good resource aside from the max on-line tut's.

Do you think Local libraries have books on 3ds Max? That would be great if they do

My local library carries some. However, right now they ony carry up to ver. 4 and not very many. They have lots for v. 1, 2, & 3 including beat up copies of the Inside series.

Me? I just buy them. A good link for the best prices on books can be found at www.anybook4less.com

Yeah i like the tutorial on creating the house in the first chapter the tools i learned in that chapter have proved to be invaluable.
I doubt very much a library will have a 3ds max book even shops i have been searching through dont have them (even whsmith!) so best bet is to order one from amazon.com or go buy 3d world frmo your local store as that magazine is brilliant and this month has a video tutorial on fully rigging a character and has a nice galaxy tutorial in the magazine.

{-=Jaxx=-} , Signal to Noise;

What is other topics that covered by the MAX 5 Fundemental book? Does it have any chapter on using script? Plan to buy one, but not available in place I stay. I have Inside MAX 4, love it.
Thanks.
