All of the above and practice! Easiest way to learn max basics is to go through the tutes that came in the manual.
As for learning modelling and animation in general, it all comes down to observation and practice. And asking questions on this forum of course!:D

To learn every aspect 3dsmax is a bit big, will take you a lifetime or more.

First of all you might want to specify what you want to learn, is it modelling, animation, lightning or texturing.

When you finally decided dont to the big mistake "Wow this sound cool, particle bomb and superspray, how do I blow things up-thingy".

Start off from the very basics, this is the max help comes extremely handy.

When it comes to books, I myselft havent run across any good yet, the ones I've seen want to bring up a little bit of everything and leaves alot of question without answer.

Tutorials is great I think but you got to tell yourselt to really finnish them, and when you're done, tweak it as long you've already worked on it :)

Dont rush it and never give up, dont forget to have fun!

My own fetish is timelapse videos :P

Btw most of the tutorials in "tutorials galore" are great and you might want to check out :

I would suggest doing all of the videos over at 3dbuzz, and any other video tutorials you can get your hands on. However, for Max and everything else in life you should take some words from Mr. Lee to heart - "Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Willing is not enough; we must do."

I highly recommend going to a school that offers continuing ed or certificate full-time courses.

Then comes practice and loads of experimentation.
