Title: The dragon and the magician
Name: Xavier Collette
Country: Belgium
Software: Photoshop

A battle between a dragon tree and a magician.
And the one who is trapped is not the one you think ^^

This illustration is done only for pleasure, even if it will be part of an artbook about the dragons. It was a good test for creating new brushes (leaves ^^), and paint rocks that look like rocks (i hope so).

All comments and critiques are welcome, of course.

Done in photoshop, from sketch to final paint (10-15hours)

Very Cool Concept. It is clear that she is using the spitits of the water (or at least some sort of magic) to fight the dragon. I think that you may have done well to have more water effects, splashing, larger waves etc. Also, the water creatures don't look to be so made of water. You should try to do add highlights and to make them refract the background like a lenz. A very nice piece though.

I agree, the dragon seems to furious and raging, but there is nothing in environment to confirm it. No waves, splashes, bent trees, dirt blown away, etc.

Also, i dont like how the runes under the mage are the same as the one he is drawing in the air. I say they should differ somewhat.

The dragon is cool, though.

The concept is nice. What are missing now is dynamics (water splashes and drops). I could suggest you to check the composition: your wizard's figure could be placed better imo to create a relation between characters. You can also twist his cloak to add dynamics. Attaching a small repaint (hope it's ok) so you can get an idea.

Thanks for the suggestions ^^

About the wizard, i guess he is a little bit too static, but i didn't want him to be dynamic too (in my mind, a wizard is a guy that doesn't move a lot).
And also, he's placed here cause he must think that the dragon hasn't seen him, and fight the spirit/water dragons (even if the dragon has seen him and is going to attack him with the branches that are in the bottom right of the picture).

Thank again ;)

Impressive work ... even if it's true that the wizard seems to be too rigid or static ...

But lightning and colors are greats !

Hmm, let me see.

The dragon looks like he is being owned by the magician, but there's that little insiduous looking root that's coming in from behind him. Looks like it's really the dragon that's got the magician nailed in eh hahaha

SWEET ILLUSTRATION. I like everything.

crit: Like has been mentioned, I think if the water around the dragon's legs were seriously disrupted it would add a lot of energy and realness to the image.

I agree with everyone, that if you pay more attension to the environment, this pic will be so much better.
Anyway, you've done a great work, man. 5 stars from me^^

Very nice, I think that you could indeed make the wizard have a better position, not necessarily in plain view, maybe even more hidden in the surrounding environment. I do think there's some light missing, misplaced, not that much, I'd add some around the left part of the water. I'm not so fond of the wizard's pose though, but there's no real book about how wizards should cast spells and if there was, there would be various styles, like martial arts, but as with martial arts, it's again a matter of taste...

In any case, your concept is awesome, great idea, the little dragons in the front are also well thought of, especially the arcs on the left and right, sweet! The styling of your dragon is very nice as well, 5 stars from me!

My first opinion of this painting is that it is very well painted. Personally, I think that the composition is very well done. The tree trunks, leaves and even their roots and pushing our eyes towards the focal point of the image. The murky overtone reminds me of various Warhammer concept paintings. The dragon is very interesting and seems to meld with it's environment. I could see this dragon lurking almost unnoticed though the forest, despite its large size. I like that imagery, since dragons are usually portrayed as a prominent figure.

K, I believe that the magician is sort of standing away from the composition. It's sort of like he's watching all this happen rather than being involved in it. this would work well if you wanted to wizard to look out of place, since nothing in the piece is focusing on him. I would suggest maybe moving your magicianup to one of the small pieces of land in front of the large roots and turning his angle slightly to the left so he's facing the dragon. Or possibly even between the roots as a sillouette. The wizard would look better, imo, as taking more of an active part in the whole composition.
Also, i think that even if the dragon were stationary as it was gaping, astonished at the magical wyrms, the water at his feet comes from a small waterfall. This would denote a direction the water is moving and you would see this in the ripples in the water as it traverses around his legs. Just a hint of it might help; the angle isnt really permitting you to get into the detail of water ripples around the legs. I'd like to see some water following up on that long tail of his, too.

The painting is very cool and I enjoy it. I'd like to learn to use custom brushes in the way you used them to create the leaves.

very fine work. the colours are especially to my liking. i consider the magician's pose to be a 'classic' one, so not a lot of movement is needed from his part. just a few extra water splashes. nice vegetation!
