Hello everybody. I thought I would start a thread to hopefuilly get some critiques, tips, and so on for doing character concepts for a game project some friends and I are working on.

The idea is not to go fully rendered or that would take far to long. So the characters will be a bit sketchy just so yall know.:)

This first is of an assasin sorta character. He was hired by a secret society, and one of his first missions is to kill another character that I will be working on later.

And this is a general concept for the female of the elf race. The clothes and ears are basicly the most important things to notice. I will be working on the male elf later and will be doing other clothing styles aswell.

My goal is mainly to do a good enough job for the 3d artists to atleast have a good starting point. And also to improve my skills up to the level of those working professionly on games such as Guildwars, because they are pretty freaking good.

Hey there AOF, you're not doing badly so far. To me Rye looks more successful than femelf. The pose of Femelf is a bit wrong looking, and the blue seems too saturated, and the shadows and proportions not convincing. Trace a photo for proportions if you need to, because the important thing is to focus on the design, not unecessary struggling with other art issues. Here's what I recommend:

- do the layouts like this, and you can't expect any complaints (one of my quick concept pieces):

- your game engine may use a standard skeleton for animation, you probably want to find out what it's proportions are, and build your concepts based on that.

- and dangly bits between the legs are going to cause trouble in 3d and are likely to get modified or dropped. Best to come to terms with that early. You have to think about how the legs are going to move and intersect with things.

Cheerio

Hi,

Nice detail on the latter character. Here's some crit:

Try not to use pure white for the hilights. Also, these look like you used burn/dodge tools, as they make everything look too plastic and artificial. Oh and maybe use more of the hard edged brushed instead of the soft round one. I like the chalk brushes of photoshop myself.

I would start this kind of work using only grayscale and later on add a color layer. It's much easier to first get the values right.

Thank you both for posting I really appreciate any tips and critiques I can get.

Kevin-Killjoy: I actually set the saturation with PS's saturation deal. It was less saturated before, perhaps that wasnt a good idea.:) I am aware my lighting skills arent that great, it is one of many things I wish to improve along the way. Tracing...hmm sounds like cheating but perhaps your right, I will see if i feel comfortable enough to do that in the future.

Our game is an RPG and some of the NPC's will change clothing every now and then, and the PC at will. So basicly there is one generic body model for male and one for female of all the humaoid races and the same will go for any other races. Basicly what I think I am trying to say is that I dont think ther is really a need for a character sheet such as your infantry man concept.

The forementioned i think also takes care of the skeleton thing aswell????

As for the mid leg dangly bits...perhaps you are right. I am a 3d artist aswell and am aware of what will happen with things in that area. I guess we will see how it looks. If need be it can be taken out pretty easily.

Arisuonpaa: I dont think i used much white for hilights just light shades of the surounding colors, perhaps a bit darker might be better?? I havent used burn or dodge on either of them , i am certainly still trying to work on my color choices though. I think for my next concept I will try to use some more/different colors. I will have to give them chalk brushes a shot aswell thanks.

I will see how I like the greyscale idea aswell i sorta get bored with doing more then I have to though (ADD generation).:wise::)

Thanks again yall.

Here is the latest of my concept journey.

This is Thina, she is being hunted by Rhy (spelled his name wrong earlier). The idea behind the concept is that she is from A planet called Iviaros (similar to Earth). Her clothes is based on modern earth clothing but altered by her to appear more similar to the clothing on Kynskavion (Game world).

I tried to use hard edged brushes, a bit atleast, I tried to use them more but I am not so comfortable with blending with them yet.

Cool clothing! :D But you should really pratice anatomy and values (just as I should :/ ) to get them perfect.

Hows this, any better? I think I fixed the lighting a bit better now. As for the anatomy, i am guessing you mean hands and feet? If so the goal is not to go fully detailed. The goal is to get a good face and clothing. The hands and feet arent important, for this concept anyways, when I get into concepts with gauntlets and or gloves and such I will proly get more detailed in those areas.

Oh and I will try to do a grey scale painting for my next concept and see if I can do better on the lighting/values. Then I will try a colored version.

I did a grey scale painting to work on my values and lighting as suggested. I did a head concept for the female elf once again. Any critiques on this would be really great.

Next I think I will be doing another character from the game in grey scale then color.
