Digital painting done in Adobe photoshop. Thinking I should have gone stronger on the shadows and highlights. Tell me what you think?

The inside part of the stairs needs more shadow

Lose the texture, it seems to be holding you back from really painting. Google some references of neat stairways. Paint using these in combination with your own imagination. I find with architecture it always helps to have cool photos to look at (even if in the end the painting I come up with looks nothing like any of them). Don't give up! Keep practicing. :)

Well, I do apprechiate your oppinion. I am still learning. At the moment I am still trying to learn shading. Where as texure is a concern, I am more concerned with learning basic painting at the moment.

Unless you are looking for a comic book sort of look I would just decrease the overall saturation of the image. Just take everything down. Paint over it maybe or use some kinda of desaturation brush (I dunno if there is such a thing). Shadows need to be pushed back a little bit since there is a light coming from up the stairs casting light on the top of the stairs.

I like the texture, but vary it more. Dont use the same one for the floor. As we go back (up the stairs) in perspective the spacing of the texture should be smaller. That would add realism.

As for the composition, I am not sure what we're looking at in the forground. Even if its not important clarify that. Maybe to make it more interesting you could add somebody's shadow on the left on the wall who would be walking down the stairs.

Good luck with it.

Also, on the top four steps, it looks like you got a little sloppy in using the dodge tool to make some lights on the wall. If you are going to do something like that, I would suggest copying the layer onto itself, using the dodge tool on the copied layer and then erasing out the parts that shouldn't have a highlight (ie. the shadowed area of the stairs). After that just merge the copied layer the the other one. I think if you fixed this problem youll be surprised by the results.
