Depend's on you're background. I found Lightwave to be the blacksheep of 3d styles. The way the tool's are named, used, and set up are different then most packages.

Max, Maya, and XSI all have a similiar type of polygon modeling. In XSI it is very easy to take a box and refine it to what you want. No need to add any plugin/script/ or 3rd party tool's. You can add a vert/edge/polygon so easy and with such control that it almost makes me cry.

Just my two cents

I find Lightwave not so easy to handle or to model with. Coming from Maya and XSI, Lightwaves inteface is horrible.
But I know some people how are very happy with the modeler.
Sorry, just my experience.

well, i hated LW interface until I actually sat down and went through some tutorials and now i can use it and feel it is easy for me.. you just need to give it a week or so and keep at it, don't give up that fast...
here is my first model in LW after using it for 2 weeks -

In fairness - student licensing aside, Lightwave plus any number of plugins for whatever you like is still no where near the price of XSI.

The Experience CD is great though - and if you can deal with the limitations (which are very minor in my mind) - you can't beat "Free" anywhere ;)

Personally - I ordered the book + CD. The peice is reasonable when compared to other 3D books...hopefully the content is good.
