well hopefully most people should have heard of "In the Dead of Night" by now..

but if not, check HERE (http://www.inthedeadofnight.com) to see what i'm on about

i've been modeling some of the environments/objects for this short film, and i thought i'd put this image up just to give people a taster for what it all looks like...

i started and finished this scene early yesterday evening.... and i added Bruce this morning for a bit of fun... all in all, about 3 or 4 hours work [modeling/texturing/lighting and rendering]

if anyone has any comments as to how it could be improved i'd be glad to here them, as i'm always trying to improve my techniques

a little info about the scene.... it's a mixture of poly and nurbs..
one spot lighting the scene.... modeled and rendered in XSI 3
rendered with FG

Very nice, I cant believe how people can produce such nice stuff so quickly. Ive looked at the website for In The Dead Of Night, and it looks very nice, in fact it is one of the reasons Ive chosen Softimage as the package I'm learning, but Im a bit lost with how to actually get decent stuff modelled. Somewhere I saw you mention you are going to be making some tutorials for using Softimage, are you going to be doing any video tutorials? The Buzz video tutorials have helped me a lot, it is much easier to learn stuff when someone is explaining it to you and showing you exactly how they do it, but because there is only one VTM for Softimage, the things in it are only the very basics.

As for crits, some of the metal doesnt seem to quite look right. The metal around the rim of the table looks like it is wet, and the legs of the table and chairs seem a bit 'grainy' if that makes sence, though that might just be the pictures compression.

Thanks Sanguis Mortuum...

yeh we'll be gettin some tutorials together... they're being written at the moment by Duncan Burch one of the guys i'm working with on this film...
They will be available on the BP site pretty soon so keep checkin back,... if you're desperate for modeling tutorials there are a good selection out there.. and we have some links on the film site that should point you in the right direction..
Dunk specialises in lighting and rendering photoreal scenes...
but we will also have tutorials in cloth, and modeling. As for video tutorials, we hadn't planned to, it's a good idea, and we will certainly consider it

We do have our own forum, if you do have any questions/problems in XSI, then register on that [accessible through BP.com] and we'll try an help you out

As it goes... i've been using Xsi for just over a year started it in September 2001 [final year of uni], and before that i did not know much about modeling techniques...

about this image... i know the metal chrome isn't what it should be... there is an image mapped onto it, and that mixed with the quality of the FG is giving the grainy look to it.. when these objects are put in situ in the film, it won't be noticeable.. but i will have a 'tweak' just to get it right

Cheers

Okies, Ive signed up to BP, and cant wait for your tutorials! Ive got loads of ambitious scenes I want to make, but whenever I try making anything it just turns out terrible. I think Ive got down most of the modelling features of XSI, but its the modelling theory that I think I have problems with, I also end up with all sorts of really dodgy things, polygons where there shouldnt be, and 20-sided polys and stuff, lol.

Ohhh love the floting chairs

But to be a bit more serious.. I do love the textures and colours :) Not so much the lighting though. Anyway keep it up :p

Thanks for that seal of death :surprised who's a bit sarcy :D

i don't know what happened with the chairs thing... they are actually placed on the floor... it's because of the lighting, and the settings i've used for the FG [final gathering] that there isn't any strong shadows where they meet the ground

easily correctable, but lack of time... as it isn't a frame from the finished film.. i didn't want to waste time making it look prettier than it needed to be.. when we have plenty to do on the film

thanks for the crits though... i'll remember that.. plus lighting isn't my speciality, we've got other people for that
