Before and After - Post Examples of Your Improvement!

I've been particularly impressed by the improvement that a lot of folks have been making around here. It's been inspiring to see the progress here of those who are regular participants in and contributors to the Anatomy Forum.

I'd love to see everyone interested posting 1 example of your "Before" work and 1 or 2 examples of your "After" work. This means "Before" you started practicing art seriously and 1 or 2 of your BEST "After" works that show how far you've come since creating a Sketchbook here and participating in the Anatomy Forum.

Please follow these guidelines:

-Only 1 post per person, with a labeled "Before" picture first, + 1 or 2 labeled "After" pictures + any accompanying text you wish to write.

-As part of your post, feel free to post a link to your Sketchbook Thread for those interested in further following your progress.

I look forward to seeing your posts! :)

Your post should look something like this format wise (no you don't need a gradient or a stroke ;)):

Before:

After:

Interesting idea, Rebecca :)

Ok, I don't really have a pic from when I wasn't practising art seriously, because I wasn't practising seriously, hehe. I decided to choose to show paintings here.
The BEFORE pic is from my very first sketchbook, which I had about 8 months back. The AFTER was done for the OFDW20.
So the time between these two studies is 8 months.

AFTER

Looking forward to see others' pieces!!

Razz: That doesn't count :P They are both great.

Hmm, can only post one? But I have so many old crummy paintings I'm not proud of :\

This one is from Dec. 5 2003 Conceptart.org DSG: Alien Arena or something. Oldest painting of mine that still survives. Done with a mouse... haha.

Recent? Man I dunno, I never finish much - all sketches most of the time, how about this sketch then?

Haha, I agree with Tom - razz, you have to post stuff that sucks in order for us to compare. :p

Tom, lol, great to see your incredible improvement! Your "Before" picture is only barely matched by mine, however. Bear witness to the badness! :D

Speaking of stuff that reeks of badness, here is a blast from the past, from OFDW 004 (my sincere apologies to Zhuzhu, whose image I butchered here - BEFORE, Sept. 2005:

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b380/rebeccak5/OFDW%20004/my-version_5.jpg

AFTER 1 - One of my Thesis images from Dec. 2006 (actually the piece is meant to be seen horizontally):

AFTER 2 - Dec. 2006 / Jan. 2007 - WIP for OFDW 020:

Haha, you so edited your original post so you could post two after images.

Well ok, you two, I'll change the before image. I just wanted them to be a full body painting to a full body painting. And what an improvement from you two. I mean yeah, few years passed between yours before and after images, but still, great to see the big step forward.
Oh, Rebecca, did you really paint that? Haha :D Poor Zhuzhu. Joking of course
Tom, amazing. So pleasent to see the 'after' environment after seeing the before one :D

Oh I always love to see before & after stuff :)

I hope it's ok for me to post here too..cause I'm kinda new to this forum. But this past fall I really started to get more serious about improving my drawing/painting skills and just altogether learn more about how to draw, illustration, etc. I've made a commitment to finally just do it and stop thinking about wanting to do it!

So here are some before/after pics of the NPC portraits project I have been working on.

The Before images were done in 2003. After with photos were done in late 2005 & 2006, and the After with no refs done this past December up until now:

OK Here is my before and after. I am still learning a lot. I am looking to get a wacom now. I am using Painter 9.5 on the Gateway tablet PC. I got this in August of 2006, so here is 5 month's of partial practice with my regular everyday work.

Hi Rebecca,

Let me say it again, in public:
especially you (and some of the other helpers and teachers in this forum, Hi Glenn :) ) will always hold a special place in my heart for showing me the way (and for sometimes rubbing my face in the dirt quotedidyouusereferenceunquote)

Hmmm, next step will be just another Ryder-istically pimped drawing, preferrably not of myself. To be honest, it's been quite a journey into myself, staring at the mirror for hours and I'd actually rather look at a naked woman for hours next time...:scream:

Great idea for a thread, I always find it inspiring to see how good people get with a bit of practice and application. Well, if you're looking for extreme examples of improvement, then look no further. And the last image in these three really wouldn't have been possible without the great work I've done as part of this forum, it's the first place I point people when they ask how I keep improving.

Okay, here's BEFORE, around about '99, 2000 All from the first sketchbook i bought at the age of 18.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v300/xephyri/2000.jpg

About three years later, 2003, still no concept of the basics of anatomy or colour and light.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v300/xephyri/2003.jpg

And then I discovered digital art and this website. And it's what I credit my huge leap in improvement with, along with the freedom to experiment that. So here's my most recent WIP and the digital rembrandt copy which was such a revelation for me.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v300/xephyri/rembrandt-copysmall.jpg

what do you think is your main source of knowledge about colour and light? any tips?! :deal: - it's an area I'm really sucky at right now :)

Zeph! I love your work and your improvement and humble attitude have always been so impressive. Thanks so much for posting here! I love to see your stuff. :)

Thank you guys, much appreciated, it still kinda surprises me when i see how far my work has come. Intervain, the girl would be yours truly, and the set of photos that I used as ref are up on deviant, so could be there you've seen it! And as for light, I'm still getting the hang of it myself to be honest, but this article made it a lot clearer for me: http://www.itchy-animation.co.uk/light.htm In fact I've read through a lot of the tutorials listed here: http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=226083 and they're all helpful in one way or another. The best thing, especially given the ability you get with digital is just to practice, and to think of light as a volumous thing, like water. A lot of the discoveries i make are simply trial and error and figuring it out myself, even after reading tutorials and theories

I tried to post last night but the system was down.

Mr. Mu and Intervain - I never knew that y'all recently started too. Y'all have shown much progress. So much that I thought y'all were into digital art for years.

Zeph - Eversince you made the goddess that had the glass nose, I have been impressed with your work. I have followed your work both here and in deviant. I love your work with the color pencils as well, a favorite preference of mine. You latest with your self-portrait is great. Are you going to start supplying us with stock photos? You'd be a perfect model! Oh, and by the way, great foreshadowing. I love the backdrop of the ghostly figures.

Ok, so changed the before image again. This time into a drawing, because I have those which suck, haha. I just wanted both images to be paintings, but you needed one that sucks very hard, had to change it.

Zephyri, whoah, you've come far. Cool to see those befores and afters :bounce:

Intervain, well, ahh, you know :D Only that before is not that big of a suckie. But then again, when I look at the after ones again...in that case the before sucks :scream:

FateBringer, yay! Big difference in those two. Well, would be bad if there wasn't any :)

Mu, just great!

Rebecca, I'll repeat myself, great idea! Awesome to look around here!

These are so cool to look at! Everyone has improved so much.

I think stuff like this can really be an inspiration to yourself..it's so funny because many times, especially when you're still young and learning, you think your latest work is just great. And then a few years pass by and you're like omg..this looks like trash! It's great to be able to look back on your stuff. I know some people who throw it all away because they think it sucks..it's a shame because they won't have documented their progress.

Man...there are some SERIOUS, like, WORMHOLE jumps of improvement going on here...congratulation to everyone here, really. I think this thread is sort of a testament to the importance of having a community like this for the world. It is the end result of everything that has culminated since the beginning of the anatomy section here at cgsociety. I hope this thread stays around forever.

Though I definitely represent the absolute bottom of this community, I can at least brag of some heavy progress! :)
I discovered this place some time around April 2006, and after that I've been working hard trying to take my art to new levels. It's really just in the past few weeks I feel I've really gotten the hang on basic anatomy, and I'm looking forwards to work even more than before now. This is really beginning to get interesting, if not addicting... Yay. xD

Well, thanks everyone, for making this place such an awesome place of learning. I owe all my progress to you guys! :)

I started drawing "properly" around 5 months ago, and this was one of those pages of sketches seeing "what I can do now" before any practice. All of them are from "reference".

I have to thank everyone on this forum, although I haven't posted anything before, I have tried taking on the challenges such as drawing 50 heads, and I have been forcing myself to draw every day after work and all of it has been worth it! I am also lucky in that I know a lot of professional artists and animators (I live with a Lead Animator!) and they all too have been too kind to me in being critical and guiding me along. You can see some of my doodlings on mrfungfung.deviantart.com/gallery (http://forums.cgsociety.org/mrfungfung.deviantart.com/gallery)

I have miles to go (before I sleep), but its all so much fun! Woo!

I thought I should post my progress over the 5 years of drawing too!

2002 September, this is my first drawing. Before that I was only doodling anime eye (either left or right) because I thought I couldnt draw symmetry.

2003 November, joined a local forum on early 2003 and started received comments and critiques from the members. Went to outings with them as well. I believe that was the point my interest started to expand. Some seniors in the group taught me various techniques like inking and hatching.

2004 August, looks like it was a pretty stale year for me. I was still in last year of secondary school (high school for some of you guys?) so there was a huge exam then.

2004 April, Secondary school finished, I was preparing portfolio to enter my current design school.

2006 July, Started posting in CGtalk, I believe this was the 22nd head of the head challenge I did.

2007 Now, my last year of design school. Graduating in 4 months time. A lot of things happened to me this year and I pretty much disappeared from CGtalk for 1 whole year.
Back with a different attitude and mindset. Now drawing is part of my life and my way to express myself.

In all, I'm pretty happy with my progress but I think I can push myself further. Right now I just want to enjoy making art and let it flow through my body.

Yay another Singaporean, I think I will do likewise and do a 5 year thing since it is also the same amount of time elasped since my voyage of self-study. I think this is going to be a long post... I feel this thread is not as extreme as peoples sketchbook threads as it blows my mind to see their great works

2003, started to learn drawing from websites, anime. which I still had my old pieces to show all of you

2004 june, somewhere after I did a few sketches, learneing cel shade at the same time as well

2005 march, I think this was for portfolio work to get into a polytechnic, of course I failed with this shoddy quality of work

2006

For me, this forum has turned my life around!!.. more than improving my skills, it has changed my attitude towards modeling and towards life itself!!.. thats what I'd say!! After about a year of associating with you people, I feel I am a different artist, and a different person!!!:scream:.. though I have lost a few kilos into the bargain! Thanks, Rebecca... and all the other awesome artists here!!

I know this isnt stricly anatomy, but its the only before after I have and one of the main things thats better is the improvement of anatomy.

I drew this first one as soon as my graphics tablet arrived in august 2007, I remade it in Jan 2008

http://img144.imageshack.us/my.php?image=progressbp6.jpg

I may remake it again when I have improved a bit, I mostly like the body but would like to do the face better and use more dynamil lighting. Maybe I could do the cloth better when I am more expeienced in depicting different materials. I'll let you guys know.

Hey nice to see everyone posting here. :)

Aggs, I think that is some nice progress, I would like to see you push things more. I also think that if at some point you can get a copy of Photoshop, you would be able to advance at a faster rate than with Painter. Just my two cents. :)

I tried the trial version of photoshop and I had a hard time with it. Here is what I did in photoshop:

Before and after a few weeks of Figure Painting workshop with Don Seegmiller.
I should say that before that date, most of my work has been in 3D, with an increasing amount of 2D details painted in (see my portfolio for some examples). I am taking the workshop to develop my 2D skills and the 'after' image is the result so far.

I will open a Sketchbook thread shortly to document my progress - that is, if I don't get too distracted exploring the gems of this forum...

There has been some improvement over the years. Here's an old drawing I reworked once I learned a bit more about digital painting. I don't know if there's really any noted progress, but it is a snapshot from two different points in my life.

From 2002

Weird how these are the only two old pics I could find that weren't obvious ripoffs of someone else's work. But I'm pretty sure those two involved some sort of indirect copying too, probably. Can't remember.

2003:

2005:

Aaaand this year's best example in a similar vein to the old ones. At least I got past the DA furry and bad art phase:

I'm amazed at how people have progressed. I wonder what a couple of months of intensive drawing over the holidays could do for me? =D

i worked this in April, 2009...with adobe photoshop.
this looks pretty simple but i took too long time to paint this.
maybe for one week?
i couldn't adapt myself to digital painting from traditional way.
so i decided to chage painting program. more similar to painting on real paper.

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Qsk0UK6S7sg/SyoFUFXHS4I/AAAAAAAAAFg/en255uhkda8/s400/Spring_2010_by_siiiiing.jpg
and this is what i painted with corel painter,17th this month.
of course, it took much time to be fit for painter's interface.
but i think i could approach easier than before..

there are still many thing to learn;;; anatomy,depiction,tenicity....etc
i'm sure my progress will be continued.
