Thanks everybody! mim-Armand - I don't remember exactly how fast these sketches were done but it was done quite loosely and quick. About 5 min for the owl and the other one... don't know. Here's a couple more drawings

This one was for a demo for my digital painting class 2. It was all about heads... people, birds, monkeys, whatever. Took about 5 min and then I painted in the eyes a bit when I got home.

And here's a nonsensicle page I sketched out while warming up in the morning. Sketched then scanned and added touches in PS

Thanks so much you guys.

Incase anyone was wondering about the Toronto Subway Sketchgroup, it's still going on strong! But this Sunday Feb 18 will be the last one for about a month because Kei Acedera and I will be out of town.
Winter is definitely here. We're expecting high amounts of snow fall for the Toronto area today. I hope this will stop soon because we'll be travelling to NYC next week for the NYComicon.

Kei and I can't wait to go to California in March and get away from the freezing cold for a while.

Just a reminder to all those in my Digital Painting class tomorrow to keep your ears on your radios if it keeps snowing like it has last night. My Tuesday class was cancelled by Sheridan College due to weather and the same might happen on Thursday. As for anyone in my Tuesday class, there will be an additional class on March 13 (week 10) to make up for yesterday's class.

Here's a couple of bundled up Canadians from the subway last Sunday. And yes subway sketching is still on for this Sunday unless otherwise noted. I think it'd be a great day to sketch people. They'll all look extra funny with all the additional layers they'll be wearing.

Here's a page of doodles I did a little while ago. Splashed some tones on there this morning and figured I'd post it. Usually if I have a hard time getting down to work, I'd start sketching mindlessly just to get the juices flowing. Sometimes these doodles go a little overboard and I spend more time then I should on them but hey as long as I had fun right?

http://www.imaginismstudios.com/images/forums/sketches17random.jpg

Here's a piece I did for ImagineFX magazine about 6 months back (in the Oct 2006 issue). I wasn't allowed to show it until half a year after publication. I've done my time so I figured I'd post it now.
The piece is called "Big Bad Bunny Eater." Another humorous creature piece.

I submitted this for the new Expose 5 and it's now on the short list so wish me luck.

Hope you like it!

So here's a bunch of new stuff...

a digital lifedrawing I sketched while teaching class in Sheridan. The great thing about digi lifedrawings are that you can peel away the layers to see all the steps! Everything is usually drawn according to importance so initially the face of the man was sketched in super quick just to get the direction of the face down and not necessarily the exact likeness of head.
http://www.imaginismstudios.com/images/forums/sketches18lifedrawing.gif

Here's some subway sketches from April 1st, 2007
http://www.imaginismstudios.com/images/forums/subwaysketch070401.jpg

And here's my new videocast. In this video I'm talking about my experiences in California and my new online school where I'll be conducting a digital painting techniques class. http://www.schoolism.com (http://www.schoolism.com/) . *shameless plug**

Hey Bobby, lately im getting more into the traditional art again (pencil/paper) , but which pencil(s) are you using ? I want to buy some fine pencils.

digital-bobert
04-18-2007, 02:47 AM
Hey thanks guys.

zng-Y - I usually use a col-erase pencil (black). They're a little harder to erase but they don't smudge as easily.

I'm heading off to Calgary Alberta tomorrow for the Calgary Expo on Sunday! This is my first time in Calgary and I'm one of the invited guest artist so I'm pretty excited.

Here's a pic I did for the back cover of the Calgary Expo Artbook. I think everyone that attends will receive one so come on by the Imaginism Booth #908, 909. I'll be happy to sign the back cover.

Here's a new painting I did for Alberto Ruiz's Eye Candy book. He drew it (from his Pistolas book) and I painted it. I wanted to keep it creative and incorporate his lines in the painting as well. This was very much experimental for me

Hi Everyone,

Kei and I are having our very first art show this Saturday June 30th, 7pm-10pm at the Labyrinth Store on Bloor St W just west of Spadina Avenue.

We'll be exhibiting a collection of sketches done in the subways of our beloved city of Toronto. These are original subway sketches taken straight out of our sketchbooks. You will also have the opportunity to purchase original sketches, prints and books as well as meet us in person and ask us questions.

It's going to be very exciting and fun for us so I hope you can come make it. We're also going to be premiering Imaginism Studios' 7th book - Subway Sketches. I hear the Globe and Mail (Canada's national newspaper) is going to be there as well.

Our Subway Sketches book is full of observational drawings, tips and tutorials as well as some killer guest artists!

Guest Artists
Louie del Carmen
Thierry Lafontaine <-- Thierry will also be there to sign books on Saturday
Jason Seiler
Stephen Silver
Dean Yeagle

The Subway Sketches book is a special limited edition out of the Imaginism collection. It's 72 full color pages, signed and numbered (limited to 500 copies).

All of the Subway Sketches books bought at the show or ordered online from now until the end of August will also come with an sketch from both Kei Acedera and I. You can order the new book HERE (http://www.imaginismstudios.com/store-book.html)

http://www.imaginismstudios.com/images/forums/zombies01.jpg
On another note, I was doing a thing for TOPPS trading cards - Hollywood Zombies collection a few months ago and now the cards are out so I figured I'd post my contribution...

It's Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson from the Wedding Crashers
Here's the original sketch

Hi all,
Here's a piece I did call "Big Foot 's New Friend" but now that I think about it... shouldn't it be called "Yeti 's New Friend"? It's just that I like the words - Big Foot. It just sounds funnier.
I did this initially as a demo for my digital painting class on SCHOOLISM (http://www.schoolism.com) (Shameless plug.. sorry about that) but after looking at it for a while I thought Big Foot looked lonely so I put in a little buddy for him.

Anyhow it's a painting about love and friendship :)

I also submitted this to Exotique 3 so wish me luck guys!

By the way, anyone interested in the next Digital Painting Techniques class... the September 20th class is now open for registration.

Also San Diego Comic-Con is quickly approaching so I've been taking apart my sketchbooks and preparing a little collection to sell at Comic-Con. Kei and I will be at Table A5 so if you're coming to the show, come on by and say hi!

Here's some of the sketches that I'll be bringing. The dragon sketches are the originals for the next Imaginism book.

See you there Kyle!

Hi All,

It's that time of year again, where artists from all over travel from all over to go to the San Diego Comic Con.

For those that have never been there, this comic convention is so BIG that we just call it "Comic-Con."

It's sooo big that if you are standing in the middle of Comicon, you can't see any walls! Only the ceiling.

It's sooooo big that you NEED more then one day to see the whole convention.

It's sooooooo big that you'll probably get lost just wandering around the place. Not to worry though... all you need to do is remember one important letter and one important number.

A5 - We'll be happy to give you directions :)

Can't wait to see everyone again!
So where's everyone else sitting? Leave your info in the comments so we all know!

i have one random question :p . i was watching all the youtube tutorials that u have, and i saw that you have this 2nd window duplicated and it's instance what you do to the bigger one, goes to the small one. and vise versa. i found that very usefull. But how did you get that working?

thanks :)

Hi all.

Kei, T and I will be absent from subway sketching for the next 3 weekends. We will resume on Sept. 2nd. We're going to be in Chicago Aug 9-12 for the Wizard Convention. (http://www.wizarduniverse.com/conventions/chicago.cfm) Then it's TCAF in Toronto the weekend after and then it's the BIG Toronto con, the FAN EXPO. Can't wait for that one!! Sorry about this... but don't worry. Comicon season is coming to a halt end of this month.

These weren't from this Sunday's subway sketching. They were from today but we were on a bus at the "African Lion Safari" in Hamilton Ontario. We had a pretty fun time. I haven't been there for over 20 years...

Here's some sketches of a lion, baboons picking each others butts and other beautiful wildlife :)

wow. That's some beautiful work. Do you do the character sketches from life? OUt of your head, or from reference? The balance of photorealism and cartoony character is perfect. You don't work for Mad do you?

Hi Caulfield, No I don't work for MAD but I loved their magazines for years now. Most of everything is out of my head

Hey Bobby,

Like many others, your work has inspired me and influenced my own work greatly. I aspire to your seemingly effortless ability to create such amazing life in my artwork as you do. All of you drawings and paintings have such great appeal, and I love the when people blur the line between stylization and realism (or exaggerated realism) the way that you do. Thank you for sharing so much of your work; I have really been inspired by your podcasts as well! You're the man!

Where would one go online to find the off white, or grey sketchbooks? The molted, colored recycled paper sketchbooks look nice, where to find one? I have tried at Dick Blick and Amazon and I can't find anything. Also, what do most of you use if you have greay paper, I draw the lows and mid-lows with a Prisma Marker, the mids are taken care of with the paper, but the highs? I have been using Prisma Pencils for the whites, any other suggestions?

Thank You

Hey there Bobby,
I just had to drop by to say your artwork is very cool aswell as inspiring. After browsing this thread i just had to get my sketchbook out.
Great stuff, keep it coming.
Greets,

-Felix

PS: ever thought of looking into zBrush? Im sure with you'd absolutly rock in that 3D app.

edit: sorry for the massive thread revival, didnt see it was so old... anyway, it deserves being revived just because of its awesomeness. : )
