Hi all-

I need to create an animated sequence where a tornado is tearing through a parking lot, and create the illusion of the twister tossing cars and possibly uprooting trees in its path.

I have over 100 cars, so animating each one would be a hassle. The tornado is comprised of thinking particles, but the particle system that makes up the tornado doesn't have to directly control the tossing of the cars, it can be a system on its own, so I can fake it a bit. I thought about using particles to achieve this effect... but then I thought dynamics might be an easier route to go.

Has anyone here ever tried to create an effect like this? Suggestions about how to handle this?

Much appreciated-

Mograph could most likely do this with some expresso.

Btw, care to show the tornado movie?

I've been trying to make one for along time, and never made one that looked realistic when it came to stills.

I've never used moGraph before.. don't even know what it does - elaborate?

Yeah when I finish the project on the 14th, ill post some screenshots.

Mograph is a C4D module which allows you to apply motion effects to large groups of objects. These can either be copies of original objects which are called clones, or (might be more useful in your case) a grouping of several different objects.

I'm no expert, but this is how I'd approach it:
group all the cars into a mograph fracture object
apply a spline effector with a helix spline to arrange them into a vortex shape
Apply a step effector to give each car a gradually greater weight
and finally a random effector to animate each car's distance from the vortex

There are probably many ways to take this further.

If you're curious check our Mylenium's tutorials at Creative Cow dot net.
