Title: Too lazy to fly
Name: Lindsay Kerr
Country: United Kingdom
Software: Blender, GIMP
This images was created for my nieces in mind, I have been asked many times to draw them a fairy, I eventually gave in to the demands and decided that seeing that I hadn't drawn anything in many months I would most likely do a better job with it in 3D. I use blender 2.42 for the rendering and used the node editor to generate the skin. The bee was created quickly in a day and was rigged in place, Finally the image with its render passes where combined in the Gimp.

Very, VERY nice job! Good depth and texturing. Only wish she was smiling a bit more. :)

I always feel admiration for good pieces made with free softwares. Is the case of yours, very good. My only complain is about her skin, a bit too plasticy. More work on specular/bump features could push this imagem even higher. Anyway, it's already 5 stars to me.

This is a lovely image and concept, as a blender user I regularily check out the forums specific to that program. I think that this and in particular your blizzard contest entry rate highly amongst the very best work made with blender.

Looks good and I like the idea and the expression is good. I agree with the skin looking plastic. She looks like she has barbie doll skin...maybe thats what you wanted though. What are those spots on her...shadows? If so then that needs to be tweaked...dont know how to do that with your programs but im sure someone here knows...lol

Very nice work, the modeling looks natural and relaxed, just I agree with what was said previously about the skin texture, its a little bit waxy, looks like candle wax.
Otherwise nice job:thumbsup:
I think the black spots are pollen from the bees body?

Thanks for the replies and crits. :)
Jramauri: I have to admit that the skin does look a bit plastic so I will have to work on that skin a little bit more so I can use it for future projects.
Nerdyninja, Realism: The spots on the skin are dark blue freckles on the texture map. The freckles originate from her back near the wings and creep towards her front it is meant as a device to blend the insect wings with the skin.

Great image. I like a lot the hair of the bee. I agree with the skin and the freckles, they look a little extrange. Maybe it´s because they are too big or something. The overall image is really great, congrats Lindsay.

I love the design of her face, there's alot of "character" in it, brings her to life.
I think she's smiling just the perfect amount, coveys her laziness. Her face says to me that she could be watching her children playing, being naughty, or something.

Oh ok! Well in that case I think the freckles are probably too big and you dont want to make them too small either...some of them are smudged as well...thats about it the rest is great!

You've got a lot of good things going on here, but I have to think the hair also looks more like a doll's than real, even though the color is supposed to be fantasy. I love the wings, but I have to wonder where fairies get mascara.
The wispy fur/cloth on the fairy is kind of pretty, but it kind seems like its floating in space. I can't tell if its supposed to be attached (her fur) or if it's supposed to be clothing. I think there are a few things here that take it down from me giving 5 stars, but it does look great anyway. Fix the skin and I think you'll be set.

aiasgrace, hisham85, mikeldi, thanks for the comments
Hey kwills2567 thanks for the crits, yeah I have to agree with you about the hair, it does seem to be a bit out of proportion... just imagine the size of the hair follicles.
I have a answer for the mascara... fairies find burnt bits of grass which they then grind up to make a type of charcoal powder which is then mixed with water and applied as mascara :D but in all honestly though I changed the eyelashes to black because it looked better than purple.
The wispy fur/cloth was intentional, the thought behind it was what would a fairy wear? I originally thought of maybe pieces of petals/feathers or grass to make up the clothing but then I took into account the size of the bee, petals/feathers or grass would be too big After scratching my head for a few minutes I came with the idea of silk or spider web's which could be found anywhere and can act as a type of stick on clothing.
To create skin in blender isn't easy due to the lack of a SSS shader but there are cheats which can be used and its very much a trial and error thing so hopefully I can improve upon the skin for my next project. Thanks for your comments they've been helpful.
After all that work, I showed my youngest niece the image whom I thought I would get the biggest response from, she comes out with a line I will never forget, “I don't like fairies... I like robots, can you please make me a robot?” :surprised

What a nice work man!
I like so much the facial expression and the ambient looks very good too. Blender+Gimp can be very tools in good hands.
