clusterfuq 02-18-2003, 01:07 PM ok, i'm doing my final year uni project as a 3d short with these two toy robots who fight etc. thing is, dont know whether to do it toon shaded or normal.
heres a comparism pic, not perfect textures, just an idea of style.

and theres a quick animation test (100kb divx) of the toon one here (http://www.44t4.com/mono/toon_test_mono.avi)

DEFENITLY toon
When not tooned it's far too soft, it just doesn't fit.
Character design is great.

cheers, actually think i'm gonna do both. having the animation start on toon, then pull back showing its on tv, with the 2 'toys' on top of the telly. the telly gets turned off and we can here a door shutting (and light changing)
know its very toy story but love the idea of toys coming to life.

cheers guys. toon is sounding appealing now. no nasty texture maps, no motion blur of raytracing. saves huge on render times.
could you help me out a bit by saying why you think toon? cos this'll probably gone in my handbook i have to hand in with project.
cheers

I personally think the toon looks better in part because the simplistic scene and characters. The first thing I notice as a major difference between the 2 images is the large character's face seems to have more character/detail being toon shaded than he does in the other.
I think if the scene or characters were more complex, going with a regular 3D style render might look more appropiate.

using max 5's ink and paint shader. to be honest, i did some tests and it'll be so much easier do toon than 3d, with render times and textures.
to do all radiosity and stuff takes ages to render (and its for dvd) and i've havent really got that long left (may)
but still, comments welcome

why thank you...
done a few more tests, what so ya reckon? does it look 3d enough to impress people who know f-all all about 3d?
looks cool in motion tho. looks like futurama.

Looks good:thumbsup: I'd deffo stick with the toon shader. i've just finished my final year project for uni (you lucky git getting till may, gotta hand mine in soon) and i wish i'd gone with a simple render solution. Having a short render will give you more time to concentrate on making the anim good:bounce:
Stick with toon:thumbsup:

cheers guys. shader is just max 5's ink and paint shader, took some time messing with settings but pretty easy really. simpler than texture mapping etc!!!
shoey, have you got your project on the net, be cool to see it. know what you mean tho, kinda trying to keep rendering to a minimum cos i know how much i'll be panicing in a couple of months!!!!

Just finished the final render last night. I split it up into front and back. The back took 40hrs to do 150frames, then the front took about 12hrs per 300 frames(approx 50hrs i think). Original render was 800x456(16:9 widescreen)
The link to the thread is HERE (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=31339)
The animation link is on the first and last post. There isn't any sound on it yet but the i've tested the lip-sync against it and it looks ok.

goodwork shoey! cool little animation. is that your final render? guessing so. cool, be wicked to see it with sound.
as for toon, think i'm gonna go with it. gotta ask my lecturer, see if i'll still get a good mark if not 'photoreal'.

WOO, finally found this post again!
ok, well, i've been doing some thinking and testing and asking my lecturers about this whole debate and i think i've actually changed my mind. i wanted to show i could use texture and lighting, and my story board is actually quite dark and sad (set in a kids bedroom at night). found it really hard to do this in toon. and i put the two tests on to video and toon just doesnt work on tv that well. needs motion blur, but that seems dumb with toon!
so i played around with textures and eventually got to somewhere i like:
http://www.44t4.com/mono/mono_dark_44t4.jpghttp://www.44t4.com/mono/mono_dark2_44t4.jpg
and this is the texture on the body:
http://www.44t4.com/mono/mono_body_44t4.jpg
the upper shots where done with no radiosity or GI or anything, just lots of subtle lights with slight hints of colour to give it that 'night time' effect. this means it renders DAMN quick, even compared to toon. cool
what do ya think?
cheers
