I think your reel looks great! (Although sound-wise personally I would have preffered lyricless music, but that's just me.)

I love the balance between the cartoony stylized look with the "feels like it could work" proportions and the realistic shading. It's awesome!

I'm positive you should be able to find a good modeling job with this reel and wish you best of luck in your quest for it.

pd: *cough* nice work on the motion graphics at the end credits! :D

Awesome reel doOd! The enviroment looked pretty much identical to the concept drawing, the cavemen with the fish was a really nice touch, and the boxer was great man....really loved the sweat beading off his face and body.

As far as crits, I think you could've shown some wires on the enviroment and boxer (sense it is a modeling reel after all), not to mention it would've added a few more seconds to your reel. I liked the music though...the lyrics didnt bother me (I'm a Puddle of Mudd fan :P)

Great work overall!

Great work Arif! The cave is the most impressive. That in itself should get you a job no problem. Good luck....

that was a great presentation, very polished. Best of luck with the job search, not that you are going to need it.
I really didn't like the music, I think the fighter could have been cut a little shorter...and a real quick wireframe of the opening environment would be cool to see; cuase it was so good you had me looking for comped elements.

Arif, very nice reel.

My favorite piece is the environment, I think you did an awesome job translating the 2D concept to 3D.

I also liked the way your reel ends with the newspaper, great idea!.

Good job and good luck man.

Saw this reel a whole while back, i can't believe it took this long to reach front page. Well deserved indeed.

I really love your set, and it is definitely your most impressive piece. May i ask how you lit it, any final gathering, hdri at all? The fish's texture is also awesome, i believe it had subsurface scattering right? I haven't used the most recent version of xsi, was it 5.0 you used, if so, how's the default sss shader and how convenient does it render? Other than sss, did you use anything more special for the shader other than a generic shader setup?

Arif, It was awesome working with you this year. I love the two goonies fighting over the fish. It seems a little odd though, that they rotate rather quickly around the front side, and slow around the back side. I personally would like more time to see the front side of them.

Keep up the good work,
~Steve~

A very nice reel with some solid work in it. There are a few things I though I'd pick out though; I really liked the concept painting in the beginning and this being a modelling reel I'd expected a bit more attention to the shapes used there like the cracks and big chunks on the rockface to the left, the hearline cracks through the pillars, the contrasting big and small cracks on the paved road to the left and steps to the right. They all really add a lot of detail.
The 3d rocks feel a little too generic compared to how we see it could be.

The fish scene is awesome. I really liked how you expanded from the fish to fish and one guy to the whole scene. Great way to display the different set pieces. I must admit I was thinking "uh oh, hope the camera stops...oh nope." when it started displaying the cavemen't hairy butts though ;)
As someone mentioned maybe it would have been nicer to show their front more than their backs. I also thought the fish turntable looked too shiny, maybe not enough fresnel to the reflection but then again it's a modelling reel so that's ok.

The boxer is a really nice model down to the folds on his pants. He really shows some weight in the full body turnaround, really nice folds on the back and very neat touch with the sweatpearls. Where he was less impressive was the face (imho), specifically the mouth.
There is something weak and thin about it that makes it inconsistant with the rest of the face which shows more weight and fat. Like one punch would rip his mouth off. Seeing the rest is so great I just wanted to point that out because I think it really lets down the rest. I must admit I didn't see the frontpage thumbnail pointed to a reel at first and just thought it was a so-so head and therefore avoided it til now. I'm glad I saw it though, it's some very nice work.

Good luck with the jobhunt!

Wiro

PS: I think reels without lyrics work better but it didn't feel too distracting here.

vilen : makasih lo , u have some nice animation!btw
thx for the comment :)

henryjenzam, thx! keep on rockin in the free CG world :)

Jinian -
to answer this :
for my set, there is no final gather,GI, or area light, most of it are point light and some spotlight. they all with low fall off, so I have more control. I use SSS for most of the character.
if you asking of the wet shader, (I use that in both fish skin, and boxer sweat)
its actually separate render, so I call it "specular pass"
its only render specular. then combine it in comp
and btw its not only specular it contains reflection and actual 2 bump map (bump map from the skin and the spec map itself, combined together)
thats why it create an Illusion of drippling sweat.

Pum!
Im so honored finally u comment my reel , thank you very much!

Wiro
there is a small size of crack, but I couldnt manage to make low frequency crack. which is supposely to be one of the most important in the scene, thanks for pointing it out.

for the guy, yeah I have some little timing mistakes here, its all about the idea to make the front view look stand out, so I make some fasst rotate in the begining and normal speed when it reach the front view, but it seems need more freezing time ...

you have different view for the boxer then, nice, I tought that the body is the weaker that the head thats why I showed the head more,
btw my reference does look like that, but I like your comment about the ripped face, wish I could put that on my list when I was planning to model this guy ...

anyway thanks for all the attention wiro, I always love to get some decent evaluation like this. and hopefully I ll make some better stuff in the future.

cg samurai - thanks :)

again, thanks all for the kind ,constructive and supportive comment.!
I am really2 apreciate that.

fyi, i tried to download either size and the page says the bandwidth has been exceeded

fyi, that's what a "mirror" is for. Look at his initial post again and you will see an edited bit to include mention of some mirrors to support for the heavy bandwidth that his hosting server has been put under due to hitting the frontpage.

(Oh, and just so you know, it's a monthly bandwidth cap, so at the 1st of next month, in like five or so days, his site will work once again. ;))
