nice, whats new this time around?
its just a fix for a license issue
I guess we'll just have to wait until Maya 5 or 6 to have a decent, working version of MR in Maya.

Hey, at least it's still free!

AW Consipracy theory??
What do you think? Is A/W releasing this cool technology that never gets updated because they want new users???? It's business after all, and the only way to stay in is to sell licenses.
First we had PaintFX... Cool but still kinda half-done.
THen Mental-Ray. Increadible quality but buggy.
Now Fluids.
Do you think they're showcasing new stuff and then leave it on purpose?

I don't think that's really fair. While not "perfect" Maya's implementation of fluid dynamics is very impressive. Can you think of another software package that offers that?
What's wrong with Paint Effects exactly? I think it does what it's supposed to very well.
As for MR, well give them a chance! If those "leaked" Maya 5 beta shots are to be believed, then MR integration is something A|W have taken a long look at for Maya's next incarnation.

playmesumch00ns,
What beta shots?

can't post the maya 5 beta shots as they'll just get removed. i guess cgtalk has been asked by a|w to not show any of the shots as the beta users aren't supposed to post them or something. i dunno cuz i am obviously not a beta tester but there was a post about this in the maya forum.

yeah a couple of people linked to what looked like screen captures of Maya 5 beta (originals were on the chinadv forum I think). Leo let it be known that A|W had asked him to move the threads to "a secure place". Whether this lends any credence to the shots or not is up to you to decide. Particularly of interest was a drop-down box at the top of the new render globals tab saying "Render using: " and then listing Maya or Mental Ray:)
Wasn't really much to look at, and whether they're genuine or not is anyone's guess. Still, whets the pallette!

There is already a 'render using' option in Maya 4.5 with MR for Maya....
I dont think it's that bad. Not anywhere near the integration in XSI, but I hope that they do something similar to what XSI has for version 4.5 (i.e. making MR usable as the primary renderer)

The fact it can't render Maya's sub'd makes it practically useless for my project. :(

you can convert em to polygons and use a smooth proxy maybe

And Maya Fur...?
And Maya Paint Effects....?
Oh the pain....

Well you talked about subds... :p

Luna , you can render fur and paint effects seperately and comp them.
even if you render with the Maya default renderer thats the workflow anyway. You never render fur and pfx and everything else on one big pass.

I'm not a Maya expert Sheep so... why do you have to render them separately even with Maya's renderer?

that way you will have more control on how they look because you can adjust them in post.

It's more than that, Maya renders them seperately from the rest of the scene itself, using the postprocess callback: check out the API documentation for the MRenderCallback class.

Pfx and fur are both post processes, so you might as well render them seperately and comp them later. I think pfx needs a little tweaking in post anyways. Maya's stock renderer DOES do it all at once, but I still prefer to comp.
Im sure sub-d's will be supported in the next version. It would be nice to see pfx and fur support as well.
Hell, while they are at it, they should finish pfx so if can be see in reflections etc. Is there any idea when Maya 5 will be out? Version 4/4.5 was a bit disapointing of a release imho.
