The Timeline:
Each contest starts on a Monday, every other monday. There will be exactly 10 days to create and submit you submission. The remainder of the second week will be devoted to judging.

January 2007 Part I: Thinking outside of the crate

The title is everybit as cliched as the item: crates. So let me make it clear, we are not making crates. What's wrong with crates? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_and_video_game_clich%C3%A9s)
Let's face it, we've seen way too many as gamers and there should be many more creative things to do with the basic box primitive. That being said the goal of this challenge is to be as innovative as possible with the supplied cube and make the texture map really shine.

Tech Specs/Guidlines:

Use the supplied OBJ, DO NOT change it. (Part of the fun of this, is that everyone has the same object to start with)
512 x 512 of pixels to be divided (if you want to) in any way. That means four 256 x 256 for example, or just one 512 x 512. You can use less, but not more.
You may use any type of map, as long as you do not go over the previously mentioned pixel budget. For example: 256^2 diffuse, spec, normal, and alpha maps will work. However, two 512^2 maps of any kind will not.
You must specify what type of game that it is for and what purpose it serves. for example: MMORPG, decorative prop; or FPS, item holding prop; or puzzle-strategy game, character.
WIP Posts should be made in the UGAC forum titled GUTs-01-cgtalk_name. For example mine would be "GUTs - 01 - living_the_dream".
Final posts will be on this thread when you are completed. Please post a render of the object with the texture(s) applied and the flats.
The Judge (currently living_the_dream) is highly encouraged to participate, although he is ineligible to win.
Deadline:
Your final submission is due no later than Wednesday, January 10th, 2007 at 11:59 PM EST.

Good Luck to everyone!

Sounds like fun, I'm in :)

Hopefully this can stop the spiraling crashes that all the competitions are currently experiencing. Focusing on one aspect at a time should hopefully help. Now to think of a theme...

Synthesizer --- I'm glad you are interested. I thought that focusing it would help out too. This way we don't get in over our heads pulling all-nighters. I know how busy life can get with just school and work, and add in social lives, family emergencies and such, and things get bogged down. I hope the scope of this will stay so we can all complete it without any extra hassle.

And please ask any questions if I didn't already cover them, or let me know if there's a problem with the zipped OBJ that I supplied. I gotta make sure this is working since it's our first ever of these contests.

I tried the obj, and it worked fine, although, for this one, hitting the cube button should work pretty good as well ;)

yeah I'm sure that anyone could just as easily create the prim on their own, it's mostly a proof of concept for future contests and a way of making sure we have a standard.

I've got a pretty good idea rolling for mine (although I'm ineligble to win)...
I'm going to make a communication router/hub type device. I'm thinking it could be used in an RPG like Deus Ex to provide strategic networks for allowing various communication between players, or to centralized networks. Check the UGAC forum for my WIP...I'll probably start some concept sketches and stuff tomorrow.

I'm in on this one, sounds like fun.. Are we allowed more than one entry?

Blengine, I think it's fine if you want to do multiple entries. Pick just one that you want me to judge by the deadline to keep things fair.

This sounds great...hopefully this will be a way for some of us to get our texturing skills increased as well as find new and innovative things to do with simple objects great idea...now i go to wreck havoc on an unsuspecting box...lol cant wait to see what you guys come up with

Is this going to be plugged on the front page? Right now we only have three entrants, and that's a bit discouraging.

This contest's first bout is officially coming to a close today. Before I start the judging process, I'd like to re-emphasize please post your final submission that you want judged on this thread. Cheers to Blengine that has already done this. I won't disqualify anyone who has a WIP post in the UGAC forum, but I'd really like to see those in here. I'm trying to set the structure for how this contest will flow in the future as well.

Also let me say that I am very pleased with the turnout and participation. I was pleasantly surprised with the ways you have "thought outside the crate." Keep up the great work!

Extension Notice: I will accept any submissions today January 10th all day until 11:59 PM EST, provided they are submitted in the previously mentioned manner.

Entry - Laundry machine

This is for a Sim or life simulation type game.
(Unless there's an extreme ironing game out there, in which case, I'd like it to be for that.)

Aww, darn it! Today of all days I had to be busy running errands. I completely forgot today was the big day. Oh well. Here's my now-late entry.

This is basically it. There's not much more interesting around the other side.

And the 512x512 diffuse.

Thanks for the participation, I think this contest has already proved to be a great success. We have thought outside the proverbial box and made some great entries. I hope this was fun and good for skillz building for everyone.

A brief review/critique of the submitted enrtries:

Swizzle - artistically great, technically I see some things that could be optimized to make it look better.
For instance, mirroring the sides that are the same in the UV and painting them once in the UV. You could probably map the side opposite the spine of the book to a portion of that part of the texture also.
This would give you a 2 x 2 squares at 256^2 resolution per square, if you get what I'm saying. I did consider you in the judging of this contest, and I appreciate the post on the main GUTs page, but be sure to be on time next time. I can't say the future judge will be as forgiving there.

BinaryHylo - The stacks of clothes and bleach are a great way to use the negative space there. You may want to dirty up the laundry machine though. It does clean things, but the machine itself shouldn't be too clean. Also, you might consider painting in more lighting detail to it. That could really establish surface detail.
And as for "X-treme Ironing!!!" I think that'd be a sweet game! I'm sure the novelty alone would get many players to play it.

Blengine - Very original idea. Good overall execution. And the Perot button is awesome!

And the Winner is......

...

Blengine! Congrats. As I said earlier, very original idea and great work making it.

This would give you a 2 x 2 squares at 256^2 resolution per square, if you get what I'm saying. All true. And I actually did mean to do some mirroring to save space, but real life got in the way as well as having issues with my software. If I'd worked on it for about two more hours, I'd probably have a normal map and a spec map on there.

Anywho, I bow to the awesomeness that is Blengine. That backpack is nothing short of spectacular! :D

Awesome! Thanks.. This is a fun contest. Very cool and creative entries posted, and I was also looking forward to seeing hnbmilk's tractor, and whatever master Morrell would have had in store. Hopefully there will be some more finished entries in this next one.

living_the_dream, will you continue to host the contest threads, or does each winner post the next thread?

Congratulations Blengine! The backpack looks great. It's kind of scary that you can do that to a cube. I bow with Swizzle.

living_the_dream - Thank you for the advice. Doing more visible dirt/distressing is one of the things I'm working on in my modeling. I'll work on lighting detail too.

Blengine, I had planned that the winner does the next contest thread. I think that will keep things new and exciting each time. You have until Monday to start. I'd say just copy the rules verbatim for the most part. If you have any questions let me know, but I'll be gone from 5P EST today to monday evening, so ask me soon if you can.

And once again, thanks to all that participated in the first one.

Swizzle...I understand how life can get in the way of things, and how it can simply be more important. Cheers to you for actually finishing a good entry to submit.

To those who didn't finish in time...I think you could post your WIP (or continue a thread that you already made) in the UGAC forum. I also would like to see several of the entries like the tractor finished.
