View Full Version : Bless's Sketches
Blessing 01-01-2007, 07:52 PM Some wonderful friends of the community encouraged me to open this thread, and finally I'm here. I guess it's a great oportunity to learn and share with the wonderful artists I use to see in here, so don't be shy and post all your crits. I will never, ever, feel a critique as an offense.
So, you will find here some sketches and "CIPS" (Crap In Progress) works. ;)
No further words. I leave you my Master Copy's first step. I hope Lord Leighton never see this. :p

The Workshop's deadline is really closer, and I've started to paint this yesterday, because I finally got my new machine. I hope to get to january 5th, but if I don't, I will keep working on it anyway.
As you know, feedback is really appreciated.
Thanks a lot for taking a look!

Finally you opened it! I'm SO happy !
I really love the way you started this pic. From what I can see you painted a good structure so I'll wait for more updates.
The unique thing I can suggest you is to 'scale' a little the whole figure in order to leave some 'air' all around it.
Good work guapa ! :thumbsup::love:

Congrats on your new thread!! You have a fantastic start here. I agree with Serena's comment on more space around her.I think you should be very proud of yourself for handling such a hard angle so well. Updates!

@Iridyse: Wow, thank you so much, bonita! I hope I can do justice to Lord Leighton's masterwork...
@slickgreekgeo: Oh, it's so great to see you here! Thanks a lot for taking a look! I hope to see you soon! :)
Well, my small update: little fixes on the BG, face and hair. I've got to work a lot. And the fabric, oh my God... :banghead:

I think you are proceeding in a great way. The fabric looks already good, maybe if you want to work on it, you only have to define the tiny 'folds' on her shoulder and stop :)
I think that eye and mouth are fixed now !

@ CyborgJA: Bellissima! I took your suggestion, as usual. Thanks a lot, cara!
Well, I guess here's my final version of Clytemnestra. I wish I could work it a little bit more. Anyway, even I know it isn't a great copy work, I had learned a lot painting it. I had a layers trouble in the middle of the work (I had merged all the layers and saved the image without checking "save as a copy"), so one of the many things I can suggest you, if you're interested, is not to talk on the phone and paint at the same time. :banghead:
Well, no more fluffy stuff. Even the deadline is right now, all your crits will be really appreciated, because I can take them for my next work. :)
I want to leave a special thanks to CyborgJA and Mister Sol, for their kind advices and their support. Thank you so much!

I really appreciate the way you managed the light, plus, you did an INCREDIBLE work with the study of her face. A "+" for the way you managed her breast : it's clear that you have used the experience made with your previous pic.
I love to see head-strong artists, and, believe me, you showed a real 'force' for the way you applied yourself to paint the mouth. Ok, it's not english but I hope you've understood it :scream:
Brava !

@ CyborgJA: Read those words from such a great artist like you is really encouraging. Thanks a lot! I promise I will do my best to improve.
I decided to paint head studys, and my first step is take some heads from the Head Workshop to start with. In the meantime, I'll be working on my next painting, so... wish me luck! :scream:
Well, here are my steps of Rietschel's Bust of Mendelssohn (one of my favorite composers)

Wow gal :) Im loving it, is really cool I like the work that you are doing specially in the face, I dont have the reference with me right now, but I think it needs a bit more of contrast, but thats all, otherwise is going great, I will really keep watching this one, cheers

Hi Bless,
I think you are doing a great job here. :) One thing I might recommend is to be careful not to go too light too quickly. Most people make this mistake especially at the beginning - I suggest placing a 50% separate layer of a mid-dark gray over your existing layers and then rebuilding your lights and darks more gradually. Reserve nearly pure white only for those very small areas of brightest highlight, and nearly pure black only for those select areas of darkest shadow.
Keep up the great work, and I hope to see more of your paintings! :)

@DigitalSol: Thanks a lot, Mister!! Yes, it needs more contrast, I guess. Maybe in the next image. :p
@Rebeccak: Thanks a lot for your suggestion! I did it already, but I guess I went "to the other side" and now is looking flat. You will see it in the image. :banghead:
@Ivy00: Thanks a lot! I'm glad you like them, it means a lot to me! :)

Oh well, I do not what you want to do with this pic, the single thing I can suggest you is to apply pure and glossy white only in tiny areas to enhance the sensation of silky-surface that the marble can reach. This will add a lot of 3D sense too. Here is a tiny reference (http://www.luigigalligani.it/images/luna-piena/luna-piena-marmo-bianco.jpg)
What can I say more? I hope you'll unlock your inspiration soon to show us what you can really do with colors

Well, this is a sketch I'm working on as practise, I used a photo ref from myself for the pose. Is really messy yet.
I had focused on the skintones issue. I promise I'll fix the eye and work on the hair (I don't know if she will end up with that hairstyle) and such asap.

@CyborgJA: You were absolutely right, that "Lion King's look" doesn't fit on the sketch (that's a polite way to say that really sucks). I feel embarrased every time I look at it.
Well, fixed the hair, eyes, blocked properly the shirt, etc.

Wow, you don't look stuck at all! You've captured the gesture and mood very well.
I would say the main problem is you seem to make all the colours too 'hard', like her eyebrows and the area around the nose. I think if you zoom in on the original, you'll see that different area's blend more naturally into one another, which looks more 'real'. Maybe also try to look for more colour variety (in the original, that's easiest:)), that'll make it look better as well. Blend, blend!:)
Last thing: is her right eye (left to viewer) too high up?
Good luck with it, I'll be checking in!!

Rinske gave you great suggestions. I can only add to add 'movement' to the bg so you will obtain a "not-pasted" subject

@ CyborgJA and Maladie: Thank you so much for your suggestions!! :) I really, really appreciate them.
Well, here I am, and I swear I didn't forgot I've got a Sketchbook. I got a job in wich I started to work last month (nothing related to this, unfortunately), and it's hard for me to find time to paint. Here's my little Boguereau's update. I'm really frustrated about it. The only good thing is I'm starting to deal with Painter on this piece: not easy, but really lovely.

Hoola, vengo a flotar! HoHoooo Ho! :p
Hey, that's very nice! I think it only needs some fine details... like in the hair, with a very small brush, and some shadows in the dress.. and that's pretty much it, then it looks great! so peaceful... Why would you even think of trashing it!? come ooooon!

04-06-2007, 02:23 PM
Well, I think there's a little trouble not with the eyes alignment itself but with the starting corner of her left eye. If you can, 'push' it more into the skin, in order to enhance the socket depth.
I'm sure you'll reach soon the full control of painter and you'll show us incredible things ^_^ !
Good work dear and happy Easter !

Hi everyone!
I've been away from this thread because of my new job: ergo, my lack of time to paint was horrible. And still is. *sigh*
I have not so much to say, these months were boring till death, so I will just leave you with my "image". It's just a sketch I'm working on, barely started.

Is it a cropout or the whole pic?
I think you are starting in the right way. What I notice now is :
1. the back-line is too "perfect", remember to add the curve of the scapulae.
2. In my opinion the lower 'line' of the arm is a little bit high and this causes a shift to the back of the whole shoulder
3. Hair without lighting. Please, start to add the basic light-spots in order to give a sense of roundness and continuity
4. the background is too flat. In my opinion you should start to develop it a little to erase the sensation of "attached on a surface". It will help you with shadows too
Well, nothing more to add. I hope that you work will give you a minute to breath and paint soon.
Waiting for updates...
Serena.

You ment something like this?
http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q151/Bless_paintings/Waiting4WIP-1.jpg
Tryed to fix hair and BG, and added a little bit of contrast. Yes, I know, I'm a stupid shy with contrasts. Now I must go for the scapulae and the breast. Lord, have merci of me...
Oh, and yes! It was a crop of the image. I forgot to mention it. :banghead:
I said my job doesn't allow me to paint so much, and I have decided to paint that situation in a "sarcastic way" (better laugh than cry). So, I started a self portrait following that subject. Here's a crop of the image:

Yep, it does express frustration: the frustration of "I-couldn't-solve-my-hard-colours-problem", among other things! :banghead:
Kidding aside, thank you so much for passing by! :D
And don't you dare say you're ugly, you're a beautiful fierce latina as far as I can tell...go chicka!
LOL! You made me laugh my *ss off with that! Yes, I'm a "fierce latina" but... beautiful? I thought about to submit this work, when finished, to Exotique, untill the sentence "The most beautiful characters in the world" came to my mind. Hehe, I saw myself in the mirror and said "No way!" :D

Well... I must admit I had to google "Carrie Fisher": no idea about who she is. It seems I'm not on the celebrities stuff. Now that I saw her... well... What can I say? If you say I look like her... it could be. I don't see anything similar, honestly.
Well, another crop of the image. I will focus on face, trying to push skintones further. I think the full body self-portrait must wait.

Good night to everybody. After a terrible week, I'm here again.
Tiny update of my previous sketch (full canvas this time):
http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q151/Bless_paintings/EsCopiaFiel3.jpg
*Yep, the fur will be a hell* :banghead:
About a year ago, my first painting attempt was a portrait of an uruguayan writer and composer (I was at the beggining of my Artist's Serie idea at that time). I remember that sketch, and I swear it was horrible. It was so, so much worst than what I'm about to post. I repainted the entire sketch on grayscale this afternoon.
It's messy, but I'm happy about it, even knowing his left eye needs an improvement NOW. Comparing what I did and what I've done now it's encouraging, but... God, all I need to learn is so much. Too much. I hope I can do it.
Well, here's the crap:
http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q151/Bless_paintings/Leo2.jpg
EDIT: Photobucket is being nasty with me

Ok, I'm here again, and I need help. I said the fur will be a hell, and yes, it is. I'm going to post two versions of the fur: one is a "regular" fur, the other one is a "messy" fur. I can't decide on wich one I will keep on working, so your suggestions will be really helpful. And I will ask you something else: how can I improve it?

CyborgJA
06-27-2007, 10:20 AM
I honestly prefer the 'regular' one, cause it can give you the possibility to add strange strokes as final details.
I think you have to manage a little bit the light's color interactions, especially with face + hair vs fur + bacground.
It's oging to be a great portrait, do not loose hope and continue to paint !

Huzzah!!! Great sketches!!! Quick sketchin is the bestest of practicess :D The FRAGILE guy is neat-o!! I don't know exactly what is it, but it looks great. About the blood.. maybe thinner lines, and sharp sharp sharp. Also watch the way blood flows... right now it looks like you were "avoiding" the eyes...

Another quick sketch I started, based on a lineart made by a friend of mine, who is a great artist and a Green Day fan. It's unfinished because, as you can see, I sketched Billy Joe only. The other two guys are missing: I'm planning to sketch quickly both of them, and then start to work properly. I guess I'm falling in love with speed-paintings.
Since I haven't a photo ref, I'm sure you'll find "light source's" mistakes, so please, let me know.
I'm working the whole thing on a single layer, in order to play with skintones and the most terrifying color for me: green.

Ehi great updated !
I love the palette, especially for the skintones.
I think you only have to check a little eyes' alignment and, in my opinion, you should add more "roundness" to hair in order to have the same kind of desciption of the face's volumes.
Can't wait to see more !
