View Full Version : WIP: Mighty Pirate
arisuonpaa 01-01-2007, 03:00 PM Hi, This one is based on an old digital painting from 2005 which I decided to redo to see how much I have learnt after that. This is the point where the composition is roughly sketched out using lineart. Next step is to do the shading in grayscale and finally add all the color.
The lineart:

..and the old piece from 2005:

Any comments?

Starting to get the overall shading done. Still needs more detail and texture.

Lookin' good, arisuonpaa!
Noticed a definate improvement in perspective from the first (painted) picture.
With regards to the sketch :
1. I think (personally), that maybe you should move the barrels or make only 1 or 2 of them, because they seem to have a lot of "weight" in terms of the composition, and my eyes are being led to them instead of the rat.
2. I think you need more space around the character, mainly to allow the viewers brain to notice that the rat is a seperate entity (firstly) and then use other methods (colors, textures etc) to make the viewer focus on the rat (if that is your aim)
3. I dig the wood on the deck. The light tecturing thats there now makes it look like wooden planks. Just bear in mind though (if you're going for accuracy) that especially on a ship, the wood pieces would be made to fit together as tight as possible and so you probably would get quite straight or at least "clean" seams.
Keep it comin' !

Thanks LavenPillay for your help! I'll try do something to the barrels and try to separate the rat more. Maybe if I move that shadow that slightly overlaps the rat..

Little progress this night: moved the rat a bit away from the barrels and added a shadow from an unknown object behind the screen that is cast on the barrels. This makes them less visible. Added also detail into two of the barrels.

The perspective of the floor was off.

Started to tweak the rat. Also flipped the canvas to get a fresh look.

Nice !
I always find it easier to point out things that can be improved than actually being able to improve it myself ! ;)
I really dig seeing how people tweak and imrpove their work.
Are you planning on colouring this one ? Or completing it fully in "pencil" ?0.

Thanks LavenPillay. I know it's fun to watch other people's process in small steps. I have learnt a lot while wathcing how, for example, Henning Ludvigsen paints. I'm using sort of the same technique here: do the grayscale version first, and add the color aftwerwards. It's much more fun and intuitive to start with grayscale. Let's me to focus on the values and it's also much faster if I don't have to mess with color palette all the time.
