I have a few questions.
1-How do you use shadow mapped lights?
2-Can you have a colored shadows?
3-Can you have light refract through wax?
by shadow mapped lights, do you mean gels?
Kliegs can have colored shadows, that option is under the shadow options and it's called "tint".
I wonder if you mean translucency on the wax? If so, yeah, AM can handle translucency.

Kliegs lights accept images and project rotoscopes. It works basically like a film projector.

There are some good books on lighting techniques and systems. They can be found at just about any major bookstore, local or web.
If you were asking weather or not A:M could render shadows for use in compositing, it can. Can't verify if A:M can produce colored shadows in passes or not since I've never tried.
You can blend different colors of lights to produced varigated shadows. If you used pure colored lights such as red, blue and green they will blend to produce a pure white light with tri- colored shadows.
