View Full Version : Maya tool question.
Dark Alchemist 02-18-2003, 03:23 AM I am trying to follow a modeling tutorial but it was written for 3dsmax (I know 0 Max).
How can I do this in Maya as simply as in Max?
=============
Select the one outer edge and holding down the shift key use Move to move the edge away.
Max extrudes the edge and creates a new rectangle (quadrangle or quad).
=============
Is there a mel (or builtin function) I need for this cause it sure would come in handy and without it I know I will never be able to do this tutorial.
Thank you.

I think this would be equivalent to extruding an edge in Maya. Select the desired edges (or edges) and go to 'Edit Polygon/Extrude Edge'

This is what I was thinking but its similiar but in Max you grab the edge and move it and as you move it Max will extrude it for you.
Anyways I am having a very hard time modeling in Maya so I am looking at all techniques I can and hoping one clicks with me.
The tutorial this comes from is Joan of Arc (http://www.3dtotal.com/ffa/tutorials/max/joanofarc/head1.asp)
It looks like a nice easy way to achieve a good model but the terminology is way different and not knowing Max its hard to follow like so: In the Create panel choise Shape, with Rectangle for face, build a rectangle and convert into mesh by applying a Mesh edit.
convert it to a mesh? Huh?

Well, in Maya you could set up an almost identical approach by assigning the Extrude Edge tool to a hotkey, and pressing that whenever you wish to extrude a selected edge, and when the manipulator for the extrude edge tool comes up, just use the middle mouse button to drag it out and therefore move it.

This would be equivalent to creating a poly plane with only one subdivision per side. Yes, I agree, terminology is quite different (not to mention workflow), but as you progress through your learning, you will find that just looking at what something refers to will allow you to know what sort of tools or approach you can use for it. It's all about practice. :)

Right. Well, what I was gathering from this tutorial is this is a different take on doing CPS. I had an alright time in CPS until I got to the nose :/
Anyways, thank you very much.
