search mentalray for maya tutorials

First of all, look at the instructional movies in AW's website. Look at this page:

And look for the section titled "Instructional Movies". They're really short, but they will get you going with the very basic functionalities.

After you've master that, go to:

http://www.motiondesign.biz/

For some more advanced effects.

And then... I would suggest just doing a search on google for "mental ray tutorial" or something like that. You'll probably find many that are Softimage specific, but the concepts still apply in Maya, since it's still mental ray.
