Ok, so just cruising through the forum I came up with the idea that it'd be cool to have a MGAC spin-off of sorts: Texturing only!

The idea is simple:
You are supplied with one non-textured, non-uvmapped model and your job is to UV map it to optimize the pixels and then create a texture for it given certain specs. Everyone will get the exact same model, so the emphasis here is entirely on texturing and UV optimization.

We would probably distribute the model in .obj format since that seems like one that anyone can handle...if there's another preferred format, speak up and let me know.

Post something if you are interested...As soon as we get a fair number of responses I'll get the ball rolling.

Sounds ike a really nice idea. Which difficulty do you suggest or rather, how much time should it take?

I like it, and have seen a few done before that turned out pretty cool.

The scale of the contest would need to be kept low, since I doubt many people have time to uvmap and texture next-gen models (which brings up the point, would normal maps be included in this as well?).

I think this is a awesome idea. I say do it just like the mini challenges :)

I guess normal maps would depend on what type of charecter is given.

sounds like a cool idea.

while those characters are cool, might be a little to much for the first challenge of this type. if we did it, i would suggest a much simpler model and let the textures talk for themselves.

...i'm trying to re-start/re-stimulate/re-introduce the UGAC and this could be one way. also, if anyone else has any other suggestions and or comments, post in the above link.

Sounds fun, I may have a go so long as I can find the time :)

I agree it should probably be something quite simple to start with, say something like a hammer or a dumpster or something like that.

Wow, it's good to hear so many responses (and positive at that) from the community!

As for the scope and timeline I was thinking about doing a little over a week, like 10 days. The remainder of the second week would be used for judging the entries. So start on a Monday and end the next Wednesday. From Wednesday to Sunday could be spent on judging and or giving a bit of an extension if needed.
I think we will keep it extremely simple first as far as tech specs go and then work up to bigger things later if it looks like we can do it. For example I'm thinking just one 512x512 texture map for the first one and just a box for the model. (I realize this has been done before in similar challenges)

So now the cat's out of the bag on my idea for the first one I'll give yall a preview of the topic: "Thinking outside of the crate" Yes, the title is just about as cliched as what it's mocking. We've all played the futuristic games with wooden crates...let's get real. No one is going to have those in the future. We already are more technologically advanced with palettes and shrinkwrapped packages and such. So the point here is not to make the next crate, but to take a box and texture map it into a prop that is more imaginative or feasible.

More details TBA...

I'm thinking the judge of the contest would be the supplier of the model, whether they get it from other sources or not. The judge wouldn't be able to win, but would be encouaged to participate also. The winner of each round would be the judge of the next like with MGAC.

Heavyness, I think that's a great idea for the forum, let me know how to get started on the other page and we could get this started as soon as New Year's day. (But don't count on me getting up early, :D)
