Hiho....

I need some help with Maya.
For some hours now I'm having a WEIRD rendering problem and
after much much trial & error I'm totally stuck.

My problem is:

I've just finished texturing a part of my LotR-Challenge Character and I
wanted to do some quick testrenderings together with the torso and the other
stuff.
Ok
- Quick scene setup
- imported to legs
- setup a basic 3 light rig

What's happening now is that EVERY rendering runs to a specific part
(roughly around ~60-65%) and after that either

1.) Mayas renderer tells me that there was an error
(in the maya render log there's nothing - I've checked it again and again)
2.) Maya crashes completely
3.) Maya freezes and can't be shut down
or
4.) Maya gets a Visual C++ error @ maya45.bin at closes itself

The rendered picture is not finished - big black spots where the rendering stopped.

I've checked everything, I've:

- reimported the torso
- reimported the legs
- reimported the lights
- created new lights
- created new cams

but nothing solves the problem.
The weird thing is: The torso alone renders without probs - so do the legs!
I import both into a new file: renderer gets all fluffy and refuses to work.

My question is:

Has anyone ever experienced something like that? Has anyone any idea what I
could try next, what the problem could be?

I don't know what to do next...*sigh*

Ah - before I forget:
All my textures are 512x512 or (for the big parts) 1024x1024 or 2048x2048
Is there a possibility that my 1GB ram is the source of the problem? That
the RAM gets overloaded or something like that? I've never had any problem
like that and I've rendered scenes with MUCH more textures in it...

Hm... have I said something wrong?
8 times read?
Geez...either I'm really unpopular or
this is one of those "NEVER OCCURED - DON'T KNOW HOW TO SOLVE IT!" problems...

I think that, while we all try to be helpful here, you're much more likely to get a solution to your problem from A|W support.

I don't know if it's a RAM problem. 1 GB should be more than enough. Try watching the task manager while you render and see what happens to RAM usage as your frame approaches crash-point.

Given that the torso and legs render seperately without trouble, you could just render them seperately and then comp them together in Photoshop.

Have you tried going for a clean install? When things like this happen I find it's usually Windows being a bitch.

Have you tried deleting all the shading and the lighting from the scene and rendering that? If the geometry renders fine with no shading and no lighting, then build the scene up bit-by-bit to find out what the problem is: as soon as it crashes, you know the last thing you added was the problem, or was at least the straw that broke the camel's back.

Have you got any scripts going, or particle systems (particles can really screw things up)?

Good luck!

What the **** is going on the maya..

As you suggested play I've gone through anything one time more.
I've exported all models as dxf (heard that this sometimes
solves problems where the model is somehow screwed up), because
somehow Maya didn't even want to render the torso alone?!?

Ok..nevermind - i've exported EVERYTHING, imported it, rebuild
ALL shaders *grmlbmblm* - still it won't work!

So I've downloaded mental ray 1.5, did a fast subdiv-to-poly
and now it works at last with Mental Ray 1.5... but still I have
NO idea why it won't work with maya's own renderer. *scratches his head*
:annoyed:

Have you tried another machine?
If it crashes there too, I'd fill out a bug report.

(A|W take bug reports very seriously.. I once filled out one and after a while they asked for more details & ev. scene files..)

@danylyon:

Just got one workstation here @ home.
I think I'll send the scene file to a good friend of mine -
he's using Maya too.
If the problem's still there I'm going for the bug report thing. :surprised

Thanks anyone - I think I'll stick with MR for the time being...
