Hello all,
This is my first post, so be gentle ;) I'm working on a opensource RTS demo with a buddy and this is one of the character models I'm working on. He's an archer in the form of a big ol' fat frog (because every game should have one). The mesh will come in 3 real-time LOD's (~800, ~1,500, ~3,000 polys) with norm maps. I included a couple of images of the model so far. Let me know what you think.

The initial character sketch:

From left to right: ~2,500 poly wireframe, ~2,500 poly shaded, ~200,000 poly detail model
~500 polys are saved for the armor and weapon meshes that will be attached real-time to the bone structure

awesome work mate, welcome welcome as well. looks the the normal came out well. the only thing id worry about is stretching when you rig him, especially his legs. they are 90 degrees from how he would walk in bipedal form. kinda strange to make em like that. cant wait to see more, awesoem job so far.

I am *hoping* that there won't be a lot of stretching in the hips, but I will find out tonight. I did most of the UV mapping last night and I will rig him after I get home from work and finish his UV map. I may leave a little more texture space for the region around the hip so that if stretching does occur, it won't look as bad.

The reason why I left him in sort of that funky pose is because I figured it to be an inbetween pose. His knees will be in a much more angular squating position most of the time. He's a frog, so he's inbetween bipedal and quadrupedal. The character will stand on his hind legs in a squating position in an idle stance, but he will use all 4 limbs to move/hop (I think that may have been the confusion of his weird stance. He's not going to be walking :) ). I've never tried to animate anything like this, so it should be fun

I really like the way this is coming out.

I like the pose you put him in, it reminds me of the way frogs look when they're sprawled out. For a froglike standing position, I think it will be fine, you should put a quick joint in there and test it out.

In the side view it looks like the head may be a bit too long. I wouldn't take that critcially though, as it looks fine everywhere else.

Out of curiosity, which program did you use to model it? And what kind of rts is this going to be? I'm a big fan of rts games :)

Yeah, this definitly seems lilke it will be fun.

nice model and nice normal map. the thought of a archer who is also a frog makes me laugh... in a good way, awesome idea. but then again, he could hide under cover, jump up to surprising hieghts and take you out with a nice arrow between the eyes! using his tongue to grab downed arrows while still taking shots at the enemies.

hehe, cool stuff!

Hello again,

Here's just a quick update. I finished the UV's and tested him out with this norm map. I got busy though and I haven't gotten to the rig yet : But anyway! Enjoy!

The texture so far :) I know its pertty

And here are real-time screenshots of the model. Left to right: Wireframe, shaded, and shaded with norm map
(I have to tweak the UV's and the texture. He's getting a line down the middle of his head)

Hello all,

Sorry I disappeared there for a little while. I was working on some contract work and the poor froggie got put on the back burner (mmm... frog legs). BUT, I will be doing a little IGDA real-time demo presentation this Saturday on this lil guy, so I have to hop to it! I have 2 nights to get this guy a colour map and create some animations (and finish his real-time demo). Expect updates! <<insert another bad pun here>>

Hello again,

Here's some texturing on the lil guy! (the texturing still needs some work) The colour on the frog can be changed real-time by setting an RGB value. (Its for an RTS, so you need to be able to quickly identify the team colour). Let me know what you think so far!

Enjoy!
