View Full Version : scientific art
mm149047 12-27-2006, 12:02 PM hi everybody !
i am looking for some inspiration for c4d as a scientific visualization tool. i would be interested mainly in mathematical or "experimental data" visualizations. can someone perhaps point me in the right directions ????? (i've been google'ing and thread-digging - yet to no avail so far"
ps: i use scientific data in artistic contexts only - so, there is in fact no need to stick with "real-world" images (molecules, atoms, bloodvessels etc)
thanx for any kind of advice

what scientific data are you thinking about using?

heart frequency data in ascii format
That more or less screams for MoGraph. Showing a graph made up of hundreds or thousands of parts, or changing material properties, more or less dense particle clouds, ... whatever.
What is the purpose of the visualisation? What do you want to show? Whom do you want to show it to?

well, the main objective of my work is scientific visualization for artistic purpose/display. so, my audience will rather be scientific lay people than pros looking for close-to-reality molecular representations.
i work with heart-beat frequencies in ascii format. now, one possible visualization could be something like this: www.markusmooslechner.com/004.jpg (http://www.markusmooslechner.com/004.jpg) . the final render will be printed on canvas (not the one here but the one i am still after :))
ps - as to the version i posted here, is there a chance to make the overall coloring a function of the input data? (is the proximal shader the only way?)
Proximal is only one way. If you use the heartbeat data to animate MoGraph effectors the shading functions of MoGraph offer some more options. Also you can use Xpresso to make various material parameters dependent on animation data.
You don't have by any chance a dataset you can share?

hey srek!
well, here's a c4d file with the data within. please ignore the c4d setup, for it being rather old and outdatet - (i currently have no other version in my present location). other than that it should do the job and provide the necessary data.. :)
www.markusmooslechner.com/1stunde1.txt (http://www.markusmooslechner.com/letzte%20variante1.c4d)
PS: my work will NOT bei animated. it is going to be a STILL for print :)
The link points to a HTML file not a CINEMA scene.
As for animation, you don't have to render an animation, but sometimes it's usefull to animate stuff to get it in a final position that is what you want.

hi srek!
here's the data file - finally :)

this is just to intriguing to pass up...love the idea of feeding data...
i'll try and drag remotion kicking and screaming to this thread...dunno if some of ditools parser deformer and spline parser tools might be able to handle that..
but given me some great ideas for other data feeds.
would be nice to see if remo can put some visualisation stuff for this...
cheers
edit: maybe also xspline and vector parser node from ditools...dunno though not really hot on this part of ditools.

thanx for keeping this thread alive. i have the impression that data feeding is pretty unwalked terretory in c4d. i too would hope for some plugs, ideas, inspirations etc....
thanx

nice stuff you got there on aour page!
...how do you feed, the asci data into the setup?
btw... get in contact with MNU, he will love it!

People have been doing it with music and or midi input for awhile now. I have a WIP that is almost entirely music data based. It's the same principle. Just use the data to feed some expresso and away you go. Between Xpresso and Mograph the possibilities are endless. How exactly you will feed the data depends on the nature of the data. You might need someone's help there but shouldn't be very tricky for some of the skilled coders here.

the whole music thing sprung to mind initially but would think there could be some interesting routes for feeds apart from music...the data in itself is very simple in that text file but could be interesting live feeds or recorded feeds. there are some good vj stuff out there which can probably cope with stuff like this..but getting into c4d in some interesting and abstract forms could be really nice to pull off...and then when you add the links to mo that are now possible its very mouth watering...animating the parsers in ditools (deformer/spline)could be a problem feeding each step..thats why was thinking along lines of rex node and xspline out of ditools...all that said you probably can do it without these and native with tp/xpresso and mo of course...reading sreks comments seems more than possible. would be interesting to set some live like triggers to initiate animation blocks dependant on trigger finger or keyboard type device. i've been trying to convince remo to do a particle sim around the workflow of something like ableton live if anyone is familiar with that...its very small building block approach i think would be perfectly suited to particle sim allowing feeds and small blocks building up a whole scene with all the effector down the bottom and linked to each individual block...along with universal solver along particles you'd have a serious powerhouse app...but would take awhile to develop me thinks we'll see. i'd love to hear people ideas of what they'd like to do though...this is a great one for sure and fills my head with some cool ideas..definitely fired a creative spark for me anyways.

I get an error message when I try to access that file = could you relink to the C4D file that uses the TXT file you used?
thanks much.

ciao Jan
well, as to my recent c4d experiments i input the data in simple bezier splines or objects->atom arrays / thats about it. the main part of my stuff on the website i generated outside c4d though - its all 2d fractal rendering pscs2 postprocessed
take care
