There is a material type that allows you to do exactly this. It is the 'Use Background' material type (it's on the same list as Blinn, Lambert, Phong, Layered Shader, etc).
Set the specular color to pure black, and reflectivity to 0.000, then you can change the shadow mask attribute to control how dark or light the shadow will be composited on top of other things. (what this actually does is to change the alpha value of the received shadows). An now, this will behave like some sort of transparent shader that magically receives only shadows, but you can not see the actual surface itself.
Hope this helps :)

I got some funny results when using the Use Background shader. I haven't tried it, but one of the devkit plugins is a shadowMatte shader, which may also be worth a look:)

I tried the "use Backround" but because I'm using a HDRI lighting setup I seem to be getting a constant/flat shadow. I geuss all I need is a plane with a shader that just recieves shadow information from a designated object. Any ideas?

Maya Live is a module of Maya Unlimited that is used for tracking 2D footage and placing 3D elements on top of that footage so that they blend well together. I think that pretty much explains it.

try: pressing F1, then clicking the bit that sais "Live"
see how that goes.
sorry, but if you knew it was dumb, then doesnt that tell you that it should be easily found out by your own devices?

I have never had the need to use Maya Live before, so I'm not too familiar with how to use it, but I do know that if in the hotbox, you go to 'Hotbox Controls/Show Live Menus' the menus for Maya Live will be seen, and I would assume that's how you access it.
