Hey all,

If you've read some of the posts I've made in the max and maya forums, you might've picked up the fact that I'm working on a WWII dog-fight animation. Here's the model for my P-51. I'm currently working on the bumpmap for it.

Modelled and rendered in Max 5.

that looks really good. except from the picture it looks like there are not elavators for the wing. i could be wrong though. do you have anymore views that you can post for a better cit.

You mean flaps for the main wings, or just trimmers? It does have flaps, they're just not that noticable in this shot.

Both the flaps on the wings and the aeilerons as well as the rudder will be adjustable for animation. I will post a new shot shortly.

yes that is what i ment. i kinda thought it was just the angle and the lack of texture on the plane.
on thing i noticed though while looking at the flap, (again this may just be the picture) but it looks as if the left flap goes all the way the the body of the plane. i believe that would not be the cast on a real plane, the flap would stop about 6 inchs from the body, at least this is the case on my bd-4 i own. again probly just the picture

Hey, It does stop a few inches before the body itself, it's kinda hard to see on this render though. Basically it looks like it does on the first picture here (http://www.ipmsstockholm.org/magazine/2000/03/stuff_eng_detail_p51d_05.htm) .

Hey,

Just a little update. I'm working on various effects, lighting and what have you. Here's a quick test render I made to see how it would look if the plane went through a cloud.

Worked out okay I think. Of course that's with nothing but the basic bumpmap on it.

Very very nice model. Now I'm in no position to comment on modeling technique, so I'll just post one realism technicality with the model.

The radio antenna wire shouldn't extend from the tail to the canopy, it should only go from the tail ti the post behind the canopy. That's what the post is for.

Spitfire's, Hurricanes and other planes had a similar setup. I'll double check as soon as I can find my binder with the Mustang in it.

Also, the texture should probably be the silver finish of that era of P-51.

(Bet you're all done with the model after all this thread is oldish)

Well from what I know of the P-51D, and let me just say that I'm new to this whole WWII authenticity thing, there were olive painted P-51's in the later stages of the war (I'm guessing 1944+) in what I think was low-level escort/recog.

Here's one (http://www.cebudanderson.com/357profilemissiouriarmada.htm)

Also, the radio antenna is actually show to go all kinds of different places on various makes of the P-51. I've chose to put it through the canopy an into the in accordance to among other schematics, this handy little thing:

http://www.binarybonsai.com/misc/p51schematic.jpg

(I'll be posting a superhighres version of this on my site in a few days)

Thanks for your comments though. I concur with you that the finish should probably be metallic for it to be the most authentic-looking, but it's primarily a matter of processing time for the final model, a metallic finish with all the reflections and all will simply up that nubmer beyond what I can 'afford'.

I am not done yet however :) I have been busy with other things, but I shall hopefully finish it tomorrow.

Meanwhile, here's a 360 degree render of the skybox for the project:

http://www.binarybonsai.com/misc/morning.jpg

I will post a super-high res 6-paned (as in a box) version of this on my website in a few days for anyone interested.

Cool, I finally found my book and noticed the samething your cutaway pic shows, the antenna going through the canopy.

Makes sense that low level planes would have the green paint, still looks good. The metalic makes it more complicated for sure.

Amazing plane and excelent work. I've only done some low poly game weapons like this http://storm.prohosting.com/tsandman/gr/images/sako_trg42-3.jpg that I like to show. Copy and paste the url into your browser.

How's that animation coming along? ;)

Don't ask! It's a long story, but it's on hold at the moment. I got some nice still shots out of it, some of which can be found on my site if you dig long enough.

I'll be redoing my gallery section soon, they'll be included in there.
