Is there anyone that can shed light on a technique for creating realistic sand environments such as found in Iraq? Im working on a project that has an Iraqi town and my buildings look very nice, but when I try to make the outlying terrain, ie: the desert, I just plain ole' cant figure out what to do. I followed a tutorial on 3dtotal.com for Smart Terrain. Now the map itself is perfect I can adjust the strength of the displacement to my liking. No problem there. But when I go to add sand as a texture, or even just mess with the shaders, it looks aweful. I was hoping maybe by some crazy turn of luck someone has modelled a desert and could shed some light on what to try. I use 3ds Max btw. Any help is always appreciated, thank you in adavance.

You can see in these that it does not look quite like a desert and in the third it appears to look like tinted water almost.
